The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Ms. Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, on 4 October 2021<\/p>\n

Minister of State Al Hashimy thanked the President for accepting the invitation to participate in Expo2020 Dubai\u2019s Climate and Biodiversity Week. She pledged the continued support of the United Arab Emirates to the Office of the President of the General Assembly, including for the President\u2019s priorities for the 76th session; agreed on the importance of keeping the United Nations Headquarters open for in-person diplomacy; and to strengthen the role of the General Assembly.\u00a0 She also highlighted the United Arab Emirates\u2019 prioritization of climate action, as evidenced by the country\u2019s bid to host the 28th<\/sup> Conference of Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change in November 2023.<\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly thanked the Minister of State for the hospitality of the United Arab Emirates extended towards himself and his delegation, on his first overseas visit since assuming the Presidency. He congratulated the Minister of State and the UAE for hosting Expo2020, noting the synergies between its themes and those of his Presidency of Hope and of the need for greater international cooperation to end the COVID pandemic. H.E Mr. Shahid underlined the necessity of achieving vaccine equity by the end of 2022, as the first step to build back better from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The President took note of the UAE\u2019s interest in hosting COP 28, and lauded the country\u2019s regional and global leadership on climate action.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The meeting took place in the Expo2020 Dubai\u2019s \u2018Nexus for People and Planet Pavilion\u2019 in Dubai.<\/p>\n
