{"id":257485,"date":"2022-02-08T15:35:26","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T20:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/?p=257485"},"modified":"2022-02-08T15:35:26","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T20:35:26","slug":"press-briefing-by-spokesperson-8-february-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/2022\/02\/08\/press-briefing-by-spokesperson-8-february-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing by Spokesperson \u2013 8 February 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS BY PAULINA KUBIAK GREER,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT ABDULLA SHAHID<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the General Assembly Hall this morning, there was an informal meeting of the plenary on the intergovernmental negotiations on the question of equitable representation on and increase in the members of the Security Council and other matters.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>The co-chairs are the Permanent Representative of Denmark, Mr. Martin Bille Hermann, and the Permanent Representative of Qatar, Ms. Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani.<\/p>\n<p>President Abdulla Shahid met with the co-chairs ahead of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Their aim, he said, is to \u201cinstill new life in the discussion on the reform of the Security Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addressing Member States, he said that the Security Council \u201cneeds to represent today\u2019s world; it needs to be more representative and more inclusive, reflecting the realities of 21st century international diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said this is not only important for Member States and the issues of peace and security, but is indicative of our efforts to revitalize the United Nations and to maintain the relevance of this great institution.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the success of this process, the President said, depends on the Member States.<\/p>\n<p>The President\u2019s full remarks are online<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GENDER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, the President will take part in the annual meeting of the International Gender Champions. That is a network of some 300 active champions who aim to break down gender barriers and promote gender equality.<\/p>\n<p>The President is expected to reaffirm his commitment to champion the rights of women and girls, for panel parity and to advancing the elimination of all forms of gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s meeting was organized by the Permanent Mission of
