{"id":259955,"date":"2022-03-08T10:57:17","date_gmt":"2022-03-08T15:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/?p=259955"},"modified":"2022-03-08T10:57:46","modified_gmt":"2022-03-08T15:57:46","slug":"international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/2022\/03\/08\/international-womens-day\/","title":{"rendered":"International Women&#8217;s Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.22&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;3.25&#8243; custom_padding=&#8221;|||&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; custom_padding__hover=&#8221;|||&#8221;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.14.7&#8243; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>Distinguished delegates,<\/p>\n<p>Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n<p>It is an honor to join you all for the commemoration of International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>I thank Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women for organizing today\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of this year\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day, <em>gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow<\/em>, aims to highlight the pivotal contributions of women and girls in tackling climate change, in strengthening disaster risk reduction, and in building more resilient, more sustainable societies.<\/p>\n<p>Across societies the impacts of climate change affect women and men differently.<\/p>\n<p>Women are often responsible for gathering and producing food, collecting water and sourcing fuel for heating and cooking.<\/p>\n<p>Droughts, floods, and heat waves intensified by climate change mean these tasks are becoming more difficult and time consuming, leaving women less time to pursue their education or other sources of income, and impacting their health.<\/p>\n<p>Female farmers are responsible for 45 to 80 percent of food production in developing countries, but in half the countries of the world, they are denied land rights.<\/p>\n<p>They are also often prevented from borrowing money, which could enable them to access skills training, fertilizer, better seeds, and the tools that would help increase their crop yields.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As farming lands become barren, or water shortages increase, women and girls take on increased tasks and risk. This affects their ability to pursue sustainable development objectives, affecting their health, education, and jobs and livelihoods, amongst so many other areas.<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>The economic stress caused by climate impacts can also mean less money for medication and for pregnant women to get the care they need.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, in natural disasters, more women than men die because they have less savings or property to deal with the impacts and must shelter in unsafe places. Lack of assets and restrictions on their human rights may also prevent them from moving to safer locations.<\/p>\n<p>Despite women being disproportionately affected by climate change, they play a crucial role in climate change adaptation and mitigation.<\/p>\n<p>Women have the knowledge and understanding of what is needed to adapt to changing environmental conditions and to come up with practical solutions. But they are still a largely untapped resource.<\/p>\n<p>Restricted land rights, lack of access to financial resources, training and technology, and limited access to political decision-making spheres often prevent them from playing a full role in tackling climate change and other environmental challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, more must be done to support women facing the impacts of climate or disaster risk.<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>Despite the gendered impacts of climate and disasters, women and girls continue to be leaders in each of these areas, and in broader sustainable development efforts.<\/p>\n<p>They are scientists, educators, advocates, influencers, researchers, frontline workers, decision-makers at home and at all levels of government, and in the private sector. They are setting and shaping the sustainable development discourse.<\/p>\n<p>While we acknowledge their contribution in these fields, we must also realize that women remain under-represented, under-supported, and unrecognized in the social, economic, and political fields needed for sustainable recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>We have adopted development frameworks to guide sustainable efforts, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.<\/p>\n<p>Gender equality is a prerequisite in the realization of each of these goals.<\/p>\n<p>Gender equality, and therefore the empowerment of women and girls, is a sustainable solution.<\/p>\n<p>We must strengthen mechanisms that provide pathways and support for ingenuity, ambition, and creativity, from all people who have the skill and the drive. And we must remove the barriers that prevent women from engaging.<\/p>\n<p>As a gender champion, mainstreaming gender equality remains the underlying tenet of my \u2018Presidency of Hope\u2019 \u2013 be it on vaccines, climate action, human rights, or revitalization of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/p>\n<p>It is a commitment that secures the engagement of women and girls at every given opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>It is a commitment to listen and learn, to hear the lived experiences of women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>I will continue to listen to their concerns and views, to better understand the gaps and lessons, and to understand where we need to accelerate action.<\/p>\n<p>It is my hope that you can all join me on this course of action towards a sustainable future for all.<\/p>\n<p>I thank you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women organized event for IWD<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":361,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"<p>Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p><p>I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p><p>Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p><p>A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75<sup>th<\/sup> and 76<sup>th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76<sup>th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p><p>In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28<sup>th<\/sup> last year.<\/p><p>Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p><p>I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p><p>I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p><p>Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p><p>And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the <em>Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p><p>Our work continues.<\/p><p>We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p><p>And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p><p>Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p><p>With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p><p>There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p><p>As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p><p>As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p><p>As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p><p>Colleagues,<\/p><p>We have made much progress within a short while. And with the board\u2019s support and guidance, I am sure that we can keep up this strong momentum.<\/p><p>I look forward to working alongside all of you to achieve our vision of a gender-equal
