{"id":262742,"date":"2022-03-30T13:33:07","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T17:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/?p=262742"},"modified":"2022-03-30T13:33:07","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T17:33:07","slug":"press-briefing-by-spokesperson-30-march-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/2022\/03\/30\/press-briefing-by-spokesperson-30-march-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing by Spokesperson \u2013 30 March 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS BY PAULINA KUBIAK GREER,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT ABDULLA SHAHID<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PALESTINIAN PEOPLE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, is today meeting with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.<\/p>\n<p>The agenda is to discuss recent developments in the occupied Palestinian Territory and the way forward for\u00a0the Middle East Peace process.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee\u00a0consists of 49 Member States.<\/p>\n<p>It is currently chaired by the Permanent Representative of Senegal, Ambassador Cheikh Niang<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-HABITAT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Shahid met earlier this morning virtually with the Executive Director of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Habitat, Maimunah Mohd Sharif.<\/p>\n<p>They discussed preparations for the high-level meeting on the New Urban Agenda that will be held on 28 April.<\/p>\n<p>The Executive Director briefed President Shahid on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Habitat\u2019s outreach to the various regional groups and the feedback received on the preparations for the high-level meeting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After we met yesterday, the General Assembly took action on three resolutions and decisions.<\/p>\n<p>The first resolution created the International Day of Plant Health. The Day will be marked annually on 12<sup>th<\/sup> May, starting this year. The resolution was adopted by consensus. It was sponsored by Bolivia, Finland, Pakistan, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution recognizes that healthy plants constitute the foundation for all life on Earth, as well as ecosystem functions, food security and nutrition.<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly also adopted by consensus a resolution focused on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly also agreed to logistical issues related to the Ocean Conference that will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, starting on 27 June.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMMODITIES <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turning to upcoming events in the General Assembly\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, there will be a one-day informal interactive dialogue of the General Assembly on Commodity Markets.<\/p>\n<p>The opening segment will hear from the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵCTAD Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIDO Director-General Gerd Muller.<\/p>\n<p>That segment will be followed by presentations from FAO and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵCTAD on COVID-19 and commodity trends and prospects.<\/p>\n<p>The event will then have two interactive panels.<\/p>\n<p>One will focus on the threat of crises and the renewed impetus for diversification.<\/p>\n<p>The second panel will be on overcoming dependence through technology and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The panelists include Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ officials, representatives from the private sector, academia and civil society.<\/p>\n<p>President Shahid will give closing remarks.<\/p>\n<p>I will share the program today with the noon briefing note.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SYRIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And looking further ahead, the General Assembly will hold an informal plenary meeting on the situation of human rights in Syria. That will be on Friday, 8 April in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet will deliver the interim oral
