\nSPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT ABDULLA SHAHID<\/strong>

ANOGLA<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, is on a field visit right now in Angola.<\/p>\n

He flew today to the southern part of the country to see the Cafu Canal and Chitaka Field School, and to meet with the local community.<\/p>\n

The Cafu collection and pumping station is the first of five projects created to combat the effects of drought in Cunene province. This is helping to water hundreds of thousands of animals and irrigate lands.<\/p>\n

Just a short time ago, President Shahid addressed media following the visit to the canal.<\/p>\n

He said that fighting severe drought and climate change is a global priority. A necessary part of our effort to reinforce collective resilience and strengthen sustainable development. This was the message from the COP15 in Cote d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n

A key takeaway and a recurring theme throughout that conference was that land, water, climate change, the ocean, and biodiversity are all interconnected. We cannot address one without supporting the other. Our world, our home, cannot be broken down into policy silos\u2026 it must be addressed as one relationship, the relationship between humanity \u2013 all 8 billion of us \u2013 and the natural world.<\/p>\n

President Shahid is traveling with Foreign Minister Tete Antonio. He was received by Governor S. E. Gerdina Didalelwa.<\/p>\n

HOPE FELLOWS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turning to the HOPE fellows, who are wrapping up the Brussels leg of their European study visit.<\/p>\n

Among the highlights today was a discussion about the EU\u2019s Green Deal, waste management practices and food security and safety. Earlier this week, the Fellows had sat in on a European Parliament Committee meeting on this topic.<\/p>\n

The Fellows also met today with the General Representative of Belgium Delegation of Flanders to the EU, Matthias De Moor. He briefed on how Flanders works in the context of Belgium\u2019s Federal system and in their direct diplomatic relations with the EU and other bilateral partners.<\/p>\n

On Monday, 16 May at 1:15pm is the inauguration of the lactation rooms.<\/p>\n
