 <\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/p>\n

Dear friends,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am honored to contribute to this Fourth Global Session of the United Nations Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I congratulate the organizers of this initiative, convened in support of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Stockholm +50 meeting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today\u2019s gathering demonstrates the value of interconnectedness, and the fundamental nexus between science, policy, business, civil society, and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ agencies in tackling global challenges.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Science, in particular, remains a fundamental tool in the achievement of sustainable development goals, including those directly and indirectly linked to the environment.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To reimagine multilateralism and its role in promoting and preserving the environment, we must leverage the approaches and solutions availed by science and technology.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But to do so, we need to set in place the right policies and conditions, and I believe this forum is uniquely placed to set the right tone to do that.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My friends,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Science is a cause of hope and optimism for humanity in these challenging times.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But we cannot overlook the many barriers that we need to overcome before the enormous opportunities can be realized. These include the lack of basic infrastructure, insufficient data access, and inadequate policy and governance systems to support development.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We need to create empowering conditions for all, especially developing and least developed countries, who have disproportionately suffered the impacts of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is these countries that need access to the best and most sustainable technologies.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is why this coalition of science-policy-business and finance is important to ensure environmental responses and policies are both inclusive and equitable.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My friends,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The scale of transformation needed to tackle the three planetary crises \u2014 climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution \u2014 is only possible with collective action.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Stockholm +50 is an incredible opportunity for all of us to forge lasting coalitions and foster genuine partnerships to achieve the global environment agenda.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is my strong belief that platforms like these afford us the ability to reach out to multiple networks, to municipalities and governments, and to private sector partners, to inspire many more to join these efforts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dear friends,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Climate change, unchecked resource consumption, and pollution are some of the most pressing issues facing us today, and businesses are critical to reversing these trends.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When businesses lead with purpose, they positively impact both the planet as well as business financials.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While it is understandable that transitioning to greener production practices are complex, and require deeper research into the environmental and human impact across an entire supply chain or materials life cycle, we only have one planet to live in.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The choice is clear. We need nothing less than a transformation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, consumers increasingly believe that they have a responsibility to purchase products that are good for the environment and society.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There are many studies that point out that corporate initiatives aimed at improving environmental, social and governance performance can increase productivity, efficiency, and staff retention.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In other words, sustainable business practices are turning mainstream.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We need businesses that can redefine the corporate ecosystem. Businesses that not only create, but add value for all stakeholders involved.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Markets need to go carbon neutral and eventually turn carbon negative.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Investing in sustainability can drive innovation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dear Friends,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rest assured, I will continue to do my best to spur momentum alongside you.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In July, I will convene a \u2018Moment for Nature\u2019 that will enable Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Member States and stakeholders to reflect on the outcomes of the various Summit-level events on the environment held during the 76th session.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The high-level thematic debate will also provide the much-needed political momentum for enhanced climate action on the ground.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Let us continue to forge a sustainable path forward with equitable access to solutions for all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I look forward to taking this journey together with you and wish this Forum every success.<\/p>\n

Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p>

I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p>

Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p>

A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75th<\/sup> and 76th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p>

In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28th<\/sup> last year.<\/p>

Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p>

I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p>

I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p>

Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p>

And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p>

Our work continues.<\/p>

We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p>

And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p>

Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p>

With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p>

There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p>

As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p>

As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p>

As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p>

We have made much progress within a short while. And with the board\u2019s support and guidance, I am sure that we can keep up this strong momentum.<\/p>

I look forward to working alongside all of you to achieve our vision of a gender-equal world.<\/p>
