{"id":267668,"date":"2022-06-14T12:41:18","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T16:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/?p=267668"},"modified":"2022-06-15T12:36:48","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T16:36:48","slug":"press-briefing-by-spokesperson-14-june-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/2022\/06\/14\/press-briefing-by-spokesperson-14-june-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing by Spokesperson \u2013 Tuesday, 14 June 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS BY PAULINA KUBIAK GREER,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT ABDULLA SHAHID<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>COSP15<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today is the start of the 15<sup>th <\/sup>session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>The event is taking place in New York through Thursday, on the theme of \u201cbuilding disability-inclusive and participatory societies in the COVID context and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at today\u2019s opening via video message, President of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said that persons with disabilities remain among the most marginalized in crisis-affected communities.<\/p>\n<p>This was evident during the COVID pandemic, as persons with disabilities were disproportionately affected through loss of employment, non-inclusive social protection systems, and inadequate assistive technologies.<\/p>\n<p>The President said that as we embark on a post-COVID agenda, we must incorporate the viewpoints of the one billion people living with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the international community to include the views of persons with disabilities in policy design and implementation.<\/p>\n<p>He also called on Parties to commit to improved funding and resources.<\/p>\n<p>The President\u2019s remarks come less than a week after our office organized a training on accessibility and ways to improve inclusivity here at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>In April, the President convened an informal dialogue on \u201cAccessibility to United Nations Headquarters\u201d, as part of his Holhuashi Dialogues.<\/p>\n<p><em>The President\u2019s speech is available at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/2022\/06\/14\/remarks-before-15th-session-of-the-conference-of-states-parties-to-the-crpd\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/2022\/06\/14\/remarks-before-15th-session-of-the-conference-of-states-parties-to-the-crpd\/<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GENEVA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Shahid has just arrived in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>He was received by Ms. Tatiana Valovaya, Director General of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Office in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, he will participate in a commemorative event on the occasion of the 50<sup>th<\/sup> session of the Human Rights Council.<\/p>\n<p>He will speak alongside the President of the Human Rights Council, Federico Villegas, High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet. And Estela Carlotto \u2013 who is an Argentine human rights activist. She is the President of the Association of Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate event tomorrow, President Shahid will engage with civil society representatives, particularly on the issues of his five Rays of Hope \u2013 recovering from COVID, rebuilding sustainably, taking care of the planet, respecting human rights, and the revitalizing the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>The President will also have a number of bilaterals, including with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHCR Assistant High Commissioner Gillian Triggs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked off-camera about the next round of ECOSOC Eastern Europe elections.
