\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n

AZERBAIJAN<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, is in Azerbaijan today.<\/p>\n

He met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov.<\/p>\n

He also met with Ms. Sahiba Gafarova, Chairperson of the Parliament.<\/p>\n

President Shahid also visited the Alley of the Martyrs.<\/p>\n

In the last couple of hours, President Shahid engaged with youth at ADA University \u2013 that includes students from the university and representatives of the Non-Aligned Movement Youth Network. He delivered remarks on the \u201cRole of youth in ensuring and promoting sustainable development in post-COVID period,\u201d and then took questions.<\/p>\n

He then met with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Country team led by Resident Coordinator Vladanka Andreeva.<\/p>\n

GENEVA<\/strong><\/p>\n

From Azerbaijan, the President heads to Geneva.<\/p>\n

On 15 June, he will address a high-level commemorative event on the occasion of the 50th<\/sup> session of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Human Rights Council, at the Palais des Nations.<\/p>\n

He will also have a number of bilaterals, including with Mr. Federico Villegas, President of the Human Rights Council, as well as with the High-Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Michelle Bachelet and Ms. Tatiana Valovaya, Director General of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵOG.<\/p>\n

The President will also meet with civil society representatives.<\/p>\n

The trip costs are paid for by the OPGA Trust Fund.<\/p>\n

GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><\/p>\n

Turning to events in New York\u2026<\/p>\n

The General Assembly this morning heard in an informal virtual briefing from Special Envoy Noeleen Heyzer. She briefed on the \u201cSituation of the human rights of the Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar\u201d.<\/p>\n

With President Shahid away, today\u2019s session of the General Assembly was presided by Ambassador Miia Rainne, the Deputy Permanent Representative and Charge d\u2019Affaires of Finland.<\/p>\n

ECOSOC<\/strong><\/p>\n

And speaking of the General Assembly\u2026<\/p>\n

On Friday, there was the election for the ECOSOC members. One more position remains absent. That from the Eastern European group. There were six rounds of restricted elections, specifically between two Member States. Neither garnered the required 2\/3 majority, which on Friday was 128 votes.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t yet have a date to announce for when the election will resume.<\/p>\n
