{"id":269910,"date":"2022-07-13T10:42:08","date_gmt":"2022-07-13T14:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/?p=269910"},"modified":"2022-07-20T10:44:24","modified_gmt":"2022-07-20T14:44:24","slug":"press-briefing-by-spokesperson-wednesday-13-july-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/76\/2022\/07\/13\/press-briefing-by-spokesperson-wednesday-13-july-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing by Spokesperson \u2013 Wednesday, 13 July 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS BY PAULINA KUBIAK GREER,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT ABDULLA SHAHID<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HLPF OPENING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Starting today with the High-level Political Forum or HLPF.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, spoke at the opening of the High-level segment.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Forum comes at a defining moment, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe volume, magnitude, and scale of complex challenges to sustainable development are arguably both unprecedented and unrelenting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Shahid laid out five key recommendations during this HLPF.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We must take action, that includes investment in innovation, technology and behavioral change.<\/li>\n<li>We must learn the lessons from COVID and invest in actions to protect the most vulnerable.<\/li>\n<li>We must push to reform the international financial system, in debt relief, vulnerabilities, and in Overseas Development Assistance and humanitarian aid.<\/li>\n<li>We must commit to addressing the situation of the most vulnerable countries. This includes advancing the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index. This is a tool that the President hopes will be done before the end of his Presidency, to help countries access sources of financing.<\/li>\n<li>And last\u2026 we must renew the commitment to the sustainable development of Africa, including support for universal COVID vaccination, food security and energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next week, President Shahid and the President of ECOSOC, Collen Vixen Kelapile, will convene a special dialogue on the sustainable development of Africa. That\u2019s on 20 July. And you will have a press release later today.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, the President\u2019s remarks to the HLPF are in your inboxes and online.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GOVERNMENTS FORUM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still on the topic of HLPF\u2026<\/p>\n<p>President Shahid yesterday spoke about the crucial role that local and regional governments play in providing some of the most essential services and infrastructure, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.<\/p>\n<p>Cities and mayors must be empowered to fulfill their role as &#8216;first responders&#8217; and be equipped to respond to future crises, he said.<\/p>\n<p>President Shahid also stressed the importance of electing more women for public offices in order to enhance women\u2019s representation and empowerment.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks were made at the fifth High-Level Local and Regional Governments Forum at the HLPF.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SCHEDULE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And from the President\u2019s schedule today, among his many appointments, I will highlight that President Shahid is today meeting with Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres.
