12 August 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n Dear faculty members,<\/p>\n Distinguished students of Nazarbayev University,<\/p>\n Thank you for inviting me to speak and for the opportunity to visit Kazakhstan\u2019s premier university. I am honored to be here and meet with the young and aspiring leaders, who will one day take charge of this beautiful country\u2019s destiny.<\/p>\n My friends,<\/p>\n Throughout my Presidency of Hope, I have always reiterated the importance of giving platforms to the youth and raising their profiles.<\/p>\n My goals have always been to amplify their voices and to inspire young people to actively participate in global multilateralism. To ensure that young people have a say in the decisions that affect their future, and also their present.<\/p>\n I have found this approach to be rewarding. Often, I am the one who ends up being inspired by youth. Through your heartwarming stories of courage and determination in the face of adversity. Through your passion and commitment to solving pressing issues \u2013 from climate change, to conflict, to poverty. Through your refusal to give into cynicism or shirk from challenges. Through your hope for a better tomorrow!<\/p>\n It is that youthful drive and energy that the world needs today.<\/p>\n Many of you already know this. As we face a full-fledged planetary crisis, and while countries tend to lock themselves into unreasonable positions during negotiate, it is the young that are stepping up through their activism.<\/p>\n It is young people that kept the 1.5-degree goal alive. It is young people who refuse our excuses when we, even in the face of overwhelming evidence, delay and dither on taking action to curb emissions and protect the environment.<\/p>\n It is often young people who hold us accountable when we fall short on any issue, whether it be conservation, peace, or human rights.<\/p>\n My friends,<\/p>\n It is highly befitting that today\u2019s meeting coincides with International Youth Day, with its important of theme of \u201cintergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages\u201d.<\/p>\n Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ has a responsibility to make that world manifest. We must work to create a world that benefits old and young alike.<\/p>\n There is no denying the burdens of today\u2019s challenges will one day fall on you, the young. We owe it to you to not only to work quickly and effectively to resolve the challenges we confront, but also equip you with the knowledge and skills that you will need to one day take on our responsibilities.<\/p>\n We owe it to you also, to listen to you in shaping the world you will inherit.<\/p>\n And we cannot forget, our present is your present. The challenges we confront today directly affect your lives at this very moment.<\/p>\n I note that Kazakhstan has always been a strong and active partner in the work of the United Nations and in multilateralism. Over the past years, Kazakhstan has undertaken several initiatives aimed at strengthening the work of multilateralism, evident in the wide-ranging scope of its global outreach and involvement.<\/p>\n These initiatives help foster global peace and dialogue and contributes to our attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is my sincere hope that Kazakhstan\u2019s younger generation stands ready to carry that important work forward.<\/p>\n My friends,<\/p>\n I am honored that my Presidency coincided with important milestones at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ on the agenda for youth. This includes<\/p>\n launching consultations and negotiations on the establishment of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Youth Office, to promote more meaningful, diverse, and effective youth engagement in United Nations as proposed in \u201cOur Common Agenda\u201d report by the Secretary-General outlining the future of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/p>\n I am a firm believer that by involving young women and men in the work of global multilateralism, we can lay a stronger foundation for an inclusive, relevant, and sustainable future. That is why I have made it a point to meet with young people, during my travels abroad and while in New York.<\/p>\n I also initiated a PGA youth fellowship programme to support and welcomed 8 promising young diplomats from under-represented countries at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, to work in my office, to broaden their knowledge of the workings of the multilateral system.<\/p>\n To further advance the role of youth in multilateralism, I launched the \u201cVoices of Youth \u2013 Time Capsule\u201d, which seeks to provide an additional opportunity to bring youth voices into our work at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and showcase their hopes and aspirations for the future they want.<\/p>\n I thank the Government of Kazakhstan for its contribution towards my initiative with video clip messages from young people of Kazakhstan on their vision for a world of peace, security, love and one free of all forms of discrimination.<\/p>\n Young people are not only the future but are the present as well. You are well informed of the future you want and of the actions to take. It is our responsibility to provide you with all the tools necessary to succeed.<\/p>\n My friends,<\/p>\n My final message to you is the same I have shared with every young person I have met across the globe: stay involved; stay engaged.<\/p>\n Youth involvement is critical to the continued success of multilateralism.<\/p>\n I believe I have done my part in this conversation. It is now my turn to listen to your views and concerns.<\/p>\n Once again, thank you for your time and for this wonderful opportunity to engage.<\/p>\n Whatever world we shape, we leave in the hands of the next generation. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p> In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28th<\/sup> last year.<\/p> Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p> I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p> I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p> Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p> And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p> Our work continues.<\/p> We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p> And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p> Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p> With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p> There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p> As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p> As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p> As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p> Colleagues,<\/p> We have made much progress within a short while.
