Ladies, and Gentlemen<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It may come as no surprise to you that a<\/span><\/span>s we recover from the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>reform<\/span><\/span>ing the<\/span><\/span> Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ<\/span><\/span>\u2019s<\/span><\/span> main bodies<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>which is<\/span><\/span> long pending<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> has become<\/span><\/span> more necessary than ever<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is why I made <\/span><\/span>revitaliz<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> the United Nations<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>General Assembly<\/span><\/span> ,<\/span><\/span> one of the five rays of hope of my presidency. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I commend Member States for <\/span><\/span>their <\/span><\/span>commitment<\/span><\/span> to centering youth <\/span><\/span>and enhanc<\/span><\/span>ing <\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span> meaningful<\/span><\/span>engagement<\/span><\/span> of young people<\/span><\/span> in multilateral processes<\/span><\/span>, as stated in the Declaration on the Commemoration of the 75<\/span><\/span>th<\/span><\/span> Anniversary of the United Nations<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In addition<\/span><\/span>, m<\/span><\/span>uch<\/span><\/span> of the ground covered in <\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>Secretary-General\u2019s<\/span><\/span> \u2018Our Common Agenda\u2019 <\/span><\/span>report <\/span><\/span>addresses the <\/span><\/span>critical <\/span><\/span>need for<\/span><\/span> reforms and changes, particular<\/span><\/span>ly<\/span><\/span> regarding<\/span><\/span> th<\/span><\/span>e inclusion of <\/span><\/span>youth<\/span><\/span> in the <\/span><\/span>work and processes of the <\/span><\/span>United Nations<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Paragraph 47 of the OCA report <\/span><\/span>recommends<\/span><\/span>strengthening the bond with young people within the United Nations<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> It <\/span><\/span>announces that t<\/span><\/span>he Secretary-General\u2019s Envoy on Youth <\/span><\/span>will<\/span><\/span> prepare recommendations on more meaningful<\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span> diverse effective youth engagement <\/span><\/span>with<\/span><\/span>in the United Nation<\/span><\/span>s, for <\/span><\/span>the consideration of the General Assembly and other main<\/span><\/span> Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ<\/span><\/span> bodies<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, during the thematic consultations on Our Common Agenda that were held <\/span><\/span>from<\/span><\/span> February<\/span><\/span> to <\/span><\/span>March<\/span><\/span> months<\/span><\/span> this year, <\/span><\/span>no objections were raised <\/span><\/span>to<\/span><\/span>the proposal on exploring ways of enhanc<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> youth participation in Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ processes<\/span><\/span>. This<\/span><\/span> is reflected in the summaries of those thematic consultations that I circulated on 20 May 2022<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Friends, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span><\/span>nsur<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> the meaningful participation and engagement of youth in multilateralism<\/span><\/span> is also among my priorities as President<\/span><\/span> of the General Assembly<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span>I have worked<\/span><\/span>diligently<\/span><\/span> to place youth at the center of my <\/span><\/span>work<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span><\/span>ndeed, one of <\/span><\/span>the markers of my Presidency was the<\/span><\/span>launch and successful implement<\/span><\/span>ation of<\/span><\/span> the <\/span><\/span>P<\/span><\/span>GA\u2019s first <\/span><\/span>Hope Fellowship Progra<\/span><\/span>m<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Eight<\/span><\/span> young <\/span><\/span>diplomats<\/span><\/span> from <\/span><\/span>underrepresented countries <\/span><\/span>today<\/span><\/span> work <\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span> my team <\/span><\/span>at<\/span><\/span> the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters as well as in their respective missions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I <\/span><\/span>trust<\/span><\/span> that<\/span><\/span> this initiative<\/span><\/span>\u2019s success<\/span><\/span> will inspire future General Assembly Presidents to <\/span><\/span>maintain the practice of fellowship programs and to institutionalize it even further.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The idea for an International Day for Women in Diplomacy was also an outcome of my morning dialogue with young women <\/span><\/span>diplomats<\/span><\/span> at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore<\/span><\/span>, m<\/span><\/span>y interactions with youth as PGA were not limited to our Headquarters.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

During each of my working trips, <\/span><\/span>I <\/span><\/span>proactively<\/span><\/span>conduct<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span> interactive discussions with youth representatives in <\/span><\/span>multiple countries.<\/span><\/span> Without exception I found them eager to involve themselves in global affairs and to make a difference. We owe it to them to facilitate these aspirations. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Excellencies, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I hope this afternoon produces fruitful discussions<\/span><\/span>w<\/span><\/span>hich <\/span><\/span>will lead to implementable solutions or recommendations<\/span><\/span> to be put forward for Member<\/span><\/span> States<\/span><\/span>\u2019 <\/span><\/span>consideration<\/span><\/span> ahead of the Summit of the Future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I <\/span><\/span>am grateful to Member States for their <\/span><\/span>pledging<\/span><\/span> to address this <\/span><\/span>issue <\/span><\/span>in our institution\u2019s functioning. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p>

I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p>

Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p>

A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75th<\/sup> and 76th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p>

In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28th<\/sup> last year.<\/p>

Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p>

I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p>

I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p>

Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p>

And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p>

Our work continues.<\/p>

We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p>

And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p>

Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p>

With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p>

There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p>

As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p>

As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p>

As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p>

Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p>

We have made much progress within a short while. And with the board\u2019s support and guidance, I am sure that we can keep up this strong momentum.<\/p>
