It is my pleasure to <\/span><\/span>address <\/span><\/span>all of you on this most important theme of fostering a \u2018culture of peace<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I hope to contribute to an enriching conversation on how we can apply the sentiments and principles of a culture of peace <\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span>today\u2019s world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I warmly thank the Permanent <\/span><\/span>M<\/span><\/span>ission of Bangladesh<\/span><\/span> for its support in co-organizing this meeting.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

My friends, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

A<\/span><\/span> culture of peace is<\/span><\/span> given a very comprehensive definition in the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, which was adopted by the General Assembly<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> in September 1999. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

It is defined as<\/span><\/span> \u201ca set of values, attitudes, <\/span><\/span>modes of behavior and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root<\/span><\/span>causes to solve problems through <\/span><\/span>dialogue and negotiation<\/span><\/span> among individuals, groups and nations\u201d<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

From this<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> we understand that a sustainable p<\/span><\/span>eace <\/span><\/span>does not endure<\/span><\/span> merely<\/span><\/span> through<\/span><\/span> the absence of violence or<\/span><\/span> conflict<\/span><\/span>. Rather, it requires<\/span><\/span> our communities making continuous efforts to understand one another and<\/span><\/span> to<\/span><\/span>overcome differences through dialogue and respect. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Towards this end<\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span> culture of <\/span><\/span>p<\/span><\/span>eace promot<\/span><\/span>es<\/span><\/span> a shift of behavior <\/span><\/span>with<\/span><\/span>in <\/span><\/span>and between<\/span><\/span> different layers of <\/span><\/span>societies<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> ranging from states<\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span>communities to families and individuals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The principles<\/span><\/span> of cohesion and inclusivity<\/span><\/span>underlying it are especially important <\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span> today\u2019s complex world filled with borderless challenges \u2013 such as pandemics, climate change,<\/span><\/span>disinformation<\/span><\/span> and economic uncertainty<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

E<\/span><\/span>ach of<\/span><\/span> these challenges<\/span><\/span> have cross<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>cutting repercussions <\/span><\/span>affecting the likelihood<\/span><\/span> of conflict<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

During my travel<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> as President of the <\/span><\/span>G<\/span><\/span>eneral Assembly, <\/span><\/span>I had the opportunity <\/span><\/span>of<\/span><\/span> meet<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> with<\/span><\/span>a lot of youth and women a<\/span><\/span>ctivists <\/span><\/span>working<\/span><\/span> in the areas of<\/span><\/span> sustainable development and social cohesion<\/span><\/span> and peace<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Their <\/span><\/span>sincere<\/span><\/span> commitment to public good reinforce<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> my deep belief that <\/span><\/span>the integration of all part<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> of society, particularly youth and women, is fundamental to ensure s<\/span><\/span>trong <\/span><\/span>soci<\/span><\/span>al<\/span><\/span>bonds and secure<\/span><\/span> global peace. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

E<\/span><\/span>veryone<\/span><\/span> must be given an<\/span><\/span> equal opportunity <\/span><\/span>to shape and build the<\/span><\/span> future. That is how our decision making will be made more inclusive and just. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Excellencies, <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

There is a growing recognition of the importance of the <\/span><\/span>values<\/span><\/span> of justice, diversity, equity<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> and inclusion to the success of peacebuilding efforts around the world. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, implementing these <\/span><\/span>values<\/span><\/span> is challenging given <\/span><\/span>the <\/span><\/span>deep-rooted systemic issues<\/span><\/span>, such as economic uncertainty,<\/span><\/span> and ideologies<\/span><\/span> such as those rooted in ultranationalism and bigotry,<\/span><\/span> that undermine peacebuilding.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The scale and complexity of the challenges facing societies affected by conflict calls for creative approaches<\/span><\/span>. Approaches<\/span><\/span> that<\/span><\/span> integrat<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>efforts <\/span><\/span>relevant to<\/span><\/span> prevent<\/span><\/span>ing<\/span><\/span> conflict with the promotion of human rights, justice and the rule of law.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Peace and justice are mutually reenforcing. We therefore need to invest in building more just societies<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> i<\/span><\/span>n which human rights, democratic norms, good governance, and respect for <\/span><\/span>plurality<\/span><\/span> are embedded into <\/span><\/span>their<\/span><\/span> politic<\/span><\/span>al <\/span><\/span>and constitutional <\/span><\/span>frameworks<\/span><\/span>. \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Crafting such societies, <\/span><\/span>require<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span> continuous engagement with key stakeholders, <\/span><\/span>including <\/span><\/span>global and regional organizations<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>c<\/span><\/span>ivil society<\/span><\/span>. Working alongside them, we must create strong institutions and stable and prosperous societies, conducive to peace. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Building and sustaining peace is also only possible if we <\/span><\/span>acknowledge the understanding<\/span><\/span> at the core of the 2030 Agenda, <\/span><\/span>that human rights, peace and security, and development are deeply interlinked and mutually reinforcing<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

From that perspective<\/span><\/span> I welcome the conceptual <\/span><\/span>emphasis<\/span><\/span> on<\/span><\/span> peacebuilding and sustaining peace as one of the most significant outcomes of recent Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ reforms. <\/span><\/span>This is a <\/span><\/span>milestone <\/span><\/span>step towards<\/span><\/span> building<\/span><\/span> a stronger culture of peace.<\/span><\/span> \u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We now <\/span><\/span>must<\/span><\/span> act<\/span><\/span> together<\/span><\/span> to t<\/span><\/span>ranslate <\/span><\/span>our commitments into action. By doing so we can overcome conflicts,<\/span><\/span> ensure justice and equality, and advance peacebuilding. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p>

I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p>

Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p>

A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75th<\/sup> and 76th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p>

In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28th<\/sup> last year.<\/p>

Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p>

I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p>

I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p>

Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p>

And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p>

Our work continues.<\/p>

We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p>

And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p>

Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p>

With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p>

There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p>

As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p>

As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p>

As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p>

Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p>

We have made much progress within a short while. And with the board\u2019s support and guidance, I am sure that we can keep up this strong momentum.<\/p>

I look forward to working alongside all of you to achieve our vision of a gender-equal world.<\/p>
