Ladies and Gentlemen, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Today, we mark <\/span>the International Day against Nuclear Tests, held on the 29<\/span>th<\/span> of August.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This date was chosen to commemorate <\/span>the closing of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site in Kazakhstan 31 years ago, <\/span>on the 29<\/span>th<\/span> of August 1991<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This yearly observance is a means of remembering all those who tragically lost their lives to nuclear tests.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, my friends, on this date, we are also reminded of the serious impacts these tests have on human health and on the environment, both of which can last for generations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Excellencies, <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We <\/span>must<\/span> stop nuclear tests, for good.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We <\/span>must<\/span> ensure that we have a strong, united – and most importantly, <\/span>global<\/span> front, in our mission to ban <\/span>all<\/span> nuclear testing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We must implement all existing instruments toward this end.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty provides a strong legal framework for this endeavor.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

25 years after its adoption, we must redouble our efforts <\/span>to<\/span>promote its universalization and implementation. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In this regard, let me reiterate my call to Member States who have not yet signed the Treaty to do so without delay.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I particularly urge the remaining Annex 2 states to do so, as their ratification is needed for the Treaty to enter into force. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our meeting today takes place at a time where we are faced with uncertainty and complex challenges. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Glob<\/span>al <\/span>geopolitical landscape<\/span>, <\/span>domi<\/span>nated by<\/span> the ong<\/span>oing mi<\/span>litary <\/span>c<\/span>onfron<\/span>tation<\/span> in U<\/span>k<\/span>r<\/span>aine<\/span>,<\/span> is rife with tension, which <\/span>in<\/span>urn <\/span>has exacerbated the looming threat of <\/span>a <\/span>nuclear catastrophe<\/span>by <\/span>ac<\/span>c<\/span>ide<\/span>nt<\/span>. Th<\/span>is<\/span> has increased the urgency of nuclear disarmament efforts. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Excellencies, I sincerely <\/span>urge<\/span> all <\/span>all parties work to exercise maximum restraint and promote dialogue and diplomacy<\/span>. We<\/span>need<\/span> to commit to making nuclear weapons-free world a reality. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The only way to eliminate this ominous threat is by simply eliminating the existence of nuclear weapons altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As we speak, there <\/span>are<\/span> is<\/span> an<\/span> e<\/span>stimat<\/span>ed<\/span> st<\/span>ockpi<\/span>le<\/span> of<\/span> 13,000 nuclear <\/span>warh<\/span>ea<\/span>ds<\/span> around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

This is a major concern and is quite frankly at odds with the United Nations\u2019 values.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

All member states, without exception, <\/span>must<\/span> fulfill their commitments towards nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

I welcome the <\/span>ho<\/span>l<\/span>ding of the <\/span>10<\/span>th<\/span> ed<\/span>ition<\/span> of the<\/span> Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference<\/span> in New<\/span> York f<\/span>rom 1<\/span>-2<\/span>6 Au<\/span>gus<\/span>t 20<\/span>22<\/span>, <\/span>after being postponed several times due to COVID-19. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the Conference failed to adopt an outcome documen<\/span>t<\/span>, <\/span>I commend State Parties\u2019 commitment and efforts during the intensive negotiations<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Go<\/span>ing f<\/span>or<\/span>ward, <\/span>I hope that<\/span> th<\/span>e<\/span> State Parties continue to engage in <\/span>a <\/span>constr<\/span>uctiv<\/span>e and a<\/span> mean<\/span>ing<\/span>ful <\/span>dialogue to reaffirm their commitment to<\/span> the <\/span>Non-Proliferation Treaty <\/span>as the <\/span>\u201c<\/span>cornerstone<\/span>\u201d<\/span> of <\/span>the gl<\/span>obal <\/span>dis<\/span>ar<\/span>m<\/span>ament <\/span>and <\/span>non-proliferation <\/span>regime<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

As we mark the International Day against Nuclear Test, let us recommit by working together and taking concrete action.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The only way of bringing hope to the people is by delivering a world free of nuclear weapons.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Let us work together to achieve that <\/span><\/a>world<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Excellencies, colleagues,<\/p>

I welcome you all to our second meeting and our first interaction following the resumed part of the session.<\/p>

Before I begin, I would like to recognize the loss of our dear friend and esteemed colleague, Ms. Gail Farngalo.<\/p>

A Liberian national, Gail was my Team Leader for Human Rights and was active on gender during both the 75th<\/sup> and 76th<\/sup> sessions. She leaves behind a legacy of achievements and a groundswell of respect and affection from across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and diplomatic communities. Her presence is certainly felt here today.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

When I took on this Presidency of Hope, I pledged to make gender equality a priority area for the 76th<\/sup> session. I continue to look to the board for its wisdom and expertise, as I endeavour to fulfil that pledge.<\/p>

In this regard, I have already benefited from the board\u2019s advice, from when we met on October 28th<\/sup> last year.<\/p>

Acting on that advice, I committed to ensuring that all my five rays of hope, and all my major initiatives, are approached with a gender lens.<\/p>

I made sure that the composition of my office is gender-balanced.<\/p>

I have committed to participating only in panels that have equal gender representation.<\/p>

Throughout my official interactions and travels, I have endeavoured to meet with women, including heads of states and governments, scientists, civil society representatives, and youth.<\/p>

And I am proud to inform you that five young women have been recruited into the Fellowship for HOPE<\/em> that my office recently launched. The Fellowship as you are well aware is targeted at benefiting young diplomats from underrepresented countries, pursuing careers in diplomacy or public service.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

While recognizing that we have a long way to go in the battle for gender-equality, I am proud of what my team has been able to accomplish within the past few months.<\/p>

Our work continues.<\/p>

We will continue to raise our voices on issues disproportionately impacting women, such as domestic violence and work place harassment. We will continue to push the importance of gender-equal work spaces.<\/p>

And we will continue to find new paths to empower young women with ambitious professional aspirations.<\/p>

Now is not the time to rest on our laurels.<\/p>

With the board\u2019s guidance and support, we must use the many opportunities over the coming months to further empower women and girls, and dismantle discriminatory practices against them.<\/p>

There are several upcoming events that will provide us such opportunities. I look forward to the board\u2019s suggestions on how we can best utilize them.<\/p>

As an example, the International Day of Women and Girls in science is fast approaching. We must recognize that women\u2019s contributions in science and technology have helped us cure diseases; discover new horizons in space; and develop technologies that have vastly improved our quality of life.<\/p>

As we celebrate their achievements, we must also open pathways for young girls who aspire to follow in the footsteps of pioneers in science and technology.<\/p>

Colleagues,<\/p>

Let us also reflect that the theme chosen by the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women for this year is on \u201cachieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes\u201d.<\/p>

As we strive to meet our obligations to the planet, let us recognize the important work done by women and girls at the forefront of the climate crisis, and whose humanitarian work in disaster-stricken areas has helped save lives and rebuild communities. We owe it to them to not only celebrate their work but to support them.<\/p>

Our programme of work for the months ahead has been circulated to members prior to the meeting, for consideration and feedback. Please note that the events we have planned are not exhaustive. I welcome further suggestions from the board on the content and format of future events and activities.<\/p>

We have made much progress within a short while. And with the board\u2019s support and guidance, I am sure that we can keep up this strong momentum.<\/p>

I look forward to working alongside all of you to achieve our vision of a gender-equal world.<\/p>
