COMMITTEES

The Main Committees of the General Assembly are starting their work today.

The First Committee ¨C which is Disarmament and International Security.

The Second Committee ¨C Economic and Financial.

The Third Committee ¨C Social, Humanitarian and Cultural.

And the Special Political and Decolonization Committee ¨C which is the Fourth Committee.

OHCHR

I was asked yesterday about the Third Committee and press briefings.

For its human rights-related work, the Third Committee will hear from and interact with a record number of 70 experts, including chairs of treaty bodies, special rapporteurs and independent experts, chairs of investigative bodies and working groups.

Press briefings with some of those experts will begin the second week in October ¨C likely around the 14^th.

Those briefings are organized by OHCHR.

PGA¡¯s AGENDA

In terms of President Csaba K?r?si¡¯s schedule today.

He has a number of bilaterals. Among them with Ambassador Michel Xavier Biang of Gabon, the President of the Security Council for October.

 

YOUTH DIALOGUE

Looking ahead to next week, President K?r?si will hold an informal dialogue with youth delegates from Missions, on Tuesday, 4 October.

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss how young people can effectively participate in the work of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.

This is going to be the first informal youth-focused meeting of the 77^th session.

 

QUESTIONS

 

The Spokesperson was asked about the Veto Initiative and the Emergency Special Session. The Spokesperson said that Member States can choose to reopen the Emergency Special Session whether or not there is a related P5 veto in the Security Council. If there is a veto by the P5 in the Security Council, the General Assembly would convene within 10 days of the veto a formal meeting ¨C Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵLESS the General Assembly is meting in an emergency special session on the same situation.

 

The Spokesperson was asked about reports of internet blackout in Iran. The Spokesperson said that the President called for respecting the rights and freedom of expression ¨C this applies online and offline, peaceful assembly, and association.
