{"id":248200,"date":"2022-11-02T16:10:12","date_gmt":"2022-11-02T20:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=248200"},"modified":"2022-11-02T16:10:12","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T20:10:12","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-2-november-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2022\/11\/02\/noon-briefing-highlights-2-november-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 2 November 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President <em>Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/em><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Wednesday, 2 November 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GENDER EQUALITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Happening this hour.<\/p>\n<p>President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si is holding the first meeting of the Advisory Board on Gender Equality.<\/p>\n<p>The President re-established the Advisory Board to help mainstream gender throughout the priorities and processes of the 77<sup>th<\/sup> session.<\/p>\n<p>The Board includes representatives of Member States, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>The President is expected to tell that Board that all the crisis we face impact women and girls, and the solutions need to include women and girls\u2026 From the lingering impacts of COVID-19, to climate change, and building trust.<\/p>\n<p>Now is the time to take a leap in gender mainstreaming in the General Assembly, the President is expected to say.<\/p>\n<p>You will have the remarks, once delivered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>US EMBARGO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly this morning is considering agenda item 36 entitled \u201cNecessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>You have the speakers list: <a href=\"https:\/\/espeakers.unmeetings.org\/63580636a574d60012a9512525102022\">https:\/\/espeakers.unmeetings.org\/63580636a574d60012a9512525102022<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>The debate is expected to wrap up tomorrow in the morning session.<\/p>\n<p>Member States are then expected to take action on a draft resolution related to the embargo.<\/p>\n<p>President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si presided over much of the session. In the past hour, he has handed over to one of his Vice-Presidents. That is Ambassador Brian Wallace, the Permanent Representative of Jamaica.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>GA THIS AFTERNOON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon in the General Assembly\u2026<\/p>\n<p>There will be action on a draft resolution for the modalities of the commemoration of the 40<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Convention on the Law of the Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Member States will then continue the debate on the report of the International Court of Justice \u2013 the ICJ, which started on Thursday of last week.<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly will then hear Member States continue to discuss the report of the International Criminal Court \u2013 the ICC, which began on Monday. And take action on a draft resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Ambassador Ren\u00e9 Alfonso\u00a0Ruid\u00edaz P\u00e9rez, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Chile will preside over the General Assembly this afternoon, in his capacity as a GA Vice-President.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>JOURNALISTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today is the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si recognizes press freedom as the foundation of a strong democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Crimes against journalists are crimes. Full stop. They need to be prosecuted and those responsible to be held to account.<\/p>\n<p>The President has said that in these troubled times especially, we see clearly how important it is that the rule of law be kept and protected.<\/p>\n<p>He is using the occasion to remind all Governments that they are invited to cooperate with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system, including through the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Country Teams, to implement the United Nations Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.<\/p>\n<p>Less than a year ago, the General Assembly indicated that it was deeply concerned by all human rights violations and abuses committed against journalists and media workers. This is spelled out in resolution 76\/173.<\/p>\n<p>Wording in that resolution calls on Member States to do their utmost to prevent violence, threats and attacks targeting journalists and media workers, and to ensure accountability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HUMAN RIGHTS COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCIL <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still on the issue of rights\u2026<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si has spoken about the importance of protecting, promoting and fulfilling human rights.<\/p>\n<p>The remarks were made yesterday to the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>He said that peace and sustainable development can only be ensured if human rights are upheld for all people.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si spoke \u2013 as he often does \u2013 in Arabic, English, French and Russian.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks were shared with you, and are available online: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2022\/11\/01\/pga-remarks-at-the-general-assembly-plenary-meeting-report-of-the-human-rights-council\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2022\/11\/01\/pga-remarks-at-the-general-assembly-plenary-meeting-report-of-the-human-rights-council\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>BILATERALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among his bilaterals today, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will meet with the Group of Friends of the DRR \u2013 that\u2019s Disaster Risk Reduction.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si will meet today with Ireland\u2019s Minister of State for European Affairs, Mr. Thomas Byrne. The meeting is expected to touch on peace and security issues, as well as preparations for the SDG Summit.<\/p>\n<p>Later today, the President will meet with environmental scientists Norichika Kanie.
