{"id":249057,"date":"2022-12-06T12:29:46","date_gmt":"2022-12-06T17:29:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=249057"},"modified":"2022-12-06T12:29:46","modified_gmt":"2022-12-06T17:29:46","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-6-december-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2022\/12\/06\/noon-briefing-highlights-6-december-2022\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 6 December 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Tuesday, 6 December 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>HUMANITARIAN <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly this morning is discussion how to strengthen coordination of the humanitarian and disaster relief assistance.<\/p>\n<p>There are draft resolutions that will be taken up for action later today.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks opening the debate, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si said that we are breaking the wrong records.<\/p>\n<p>The world is in a permanent state of humanitarian emergency.<\/p>\n<p>The highest number of violence conflicts since 1945\u2026 the highest number of people in need.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics, he said, are human being with the tears wiped off.<\/p>\n<p>Reminding that there are real people behind the figures.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the Central Emergency Response Fund as a way for Member States to make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>And paid tribute to the first responders, who are first in \u2013 and last out.<\/p>\n<p>The full remarks are online and in your inboxes.<\/p>\n<p>We expect action on the draft resolutions to be this afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Ambassador Syed Mohamad Hasrin Aidid, the Permanent Representative of Malaysia and a Vice-President of the General Assembly is overseeing the General Assembly this hour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CULTURE OF PEACE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Member States are also expected today to take action on a draft resolution under the agenda item Culture of Peace.<\/p>\n<p>If approved, 2023 will become the International Year of Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CTBTO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the issue of peace, turning to the promise of a world free of any nuclear explosions.<\/p>\n<p>The President said today that the promise of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty is nothing short of transformational.<\/p>\n<p>In a pre-recorded message to the CTBT Science Diplomacy Symposium in Vienna, he said the Symposium highlights what we know to be true: that science and diplomacy can and must go hand in hand in order to make progress on the most difficult political issues of our days.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that S\u00e3o Tom\u00e9 and Pr\u00edncipe was the sixth country to ratify the Treaty just this year.<\/p>\n<p>This means universal ratification across Central Africa. And a model for other regions in the world.<\/p>\n<p>You have the full remarks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROAD SAFETY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I had omitted a video message on road safety, which is unfortunate because almost 1.3 million people are killed each year and 50 million others injured on the road.<\/p>\n<p>In his video statement to the United Nations Partnership Meeting for Road Safety, the President noted four suggestions for how to cut the number of global deaths in half by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>One of those suggestions is to invest in road safety infrastructure and technologies, especially in low to middle income\u00a0 countries where most road accidents occur.<\/p>\n<p>The full remarks are online.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>BILATERALS <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turning to today\u2019s bilaterals\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The President will meet with a delegation from the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵEP New York Office.<\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, the President will meet with Mr. Yuri Ambrazevich, the Deputy Foreign Minister of\u00a0 Belarus.<\/p>\n<p>He will also be meeting with Under-Secretary-General and Special Advisory on Africa, Ms. Cristina Duarte.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>IGN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday I was asked about the start of the Intergovernmental Negotiations on Security Council Reform.
