EDUCATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

You just heard from our guest, Stefania Giannini,\u00a0Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO Assistant Director-General for Education.<\/p>\n

Staying with the International Day of Education\u2026<\/p>\n

President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si is expected any moment now to start remarks at the education event organized by Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO and the Group of Friends for Education.<\/p>\n

He is expected to receive an open letter, delivered by two young representatives – Kenisha Arora and Doris Mwikali \u2013 urging world leaders to prioritize education.<\/p>\n

The President is expected to say that he echoes their call for the decision-makers of the world to urgently \u201cwalk the talk\u201d and invest in global education transformation.<\/p>\n

He is expected to point to the global situation of education \u2013 noting that six out of 10 children around the world cannot read at the age of 10\u2026 and millions cannot attend school.<\/p>\n

Given the special priority on Afghanistan this year, the President will reiterate his own concerns about the treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

That with their human rights denied, their futures destroyed, their dreams shattered, there are no more freedoms left to take from them.<\/p>\n

The President will likely repeat the Secretary-General\u2019s warning that this conduct risks turning Afghanistan into a \u201cgender apartheid society.\u201d And is the international community going to stand by and watch?<\/p>\n

GENOCIDE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turning now to ECOSOC\u2026<\/p>\n

Where President K\u0151r\u00f6si took part this morning in a Special Meeting on \u201cSocial and Economic Measures to Prevent Genocide, War Crimes, Ethnic Cleansing and Crimes against Humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n

The President said that we have heard the phrase \u201cnever again\u201d too many times. A failure measured in lives lost.<\/p>\n

He urged the international community to learn from policies that fomented the horrors of the Holocaust \u2013 and tragedies in Cambodia, the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is incumbent on us all<\/u> \u2013 across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ \u2013 to engage with community and faith leaders, indigenous peoples, civil society, the private sector, academia, the media and others and to define transformative<\/u> solutions<\/u>,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n

He wrapped up his remarks by stressing that everyone will be judged for their inactions. The question will one day be asked: What did we do in 2023 to ensure genocide was prevented?<\/p>\n

BILATERALS<\/strong><\/p>\n

And in terms of bilaterals\u2026<\/p>\n

President K\u0151r\u00f6si will meet this afternoon with Ambassador Yoka Brand, the Permanent Representative of Netherlands, and Ambassador Jonibek Hikmat, the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan. These countries are co-hosting the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Water Conference, and that is also the topic of today\u2019s conversation.<\/p>\n

The President is also meeting with Ambassador Vanessa Frazier, the Permanent Representative of Malta.<\/p>\n

As well as with Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris, the Permanent Representative of Greece.<\/p>\n
