{"id":249802,"date":"2023-01-25T15:19:28","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T20:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=249802"},"modified":"2023-01-27T14:07:29","modified_gmt":"2023-01-27T19:07:29","slug":"todays-noon-briefing-25-january-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/01\/25\/todays-noon-briefing-25-january-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 25 January 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Wednesday, 25 January 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>INDIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, will make an official visit to India from 29 to 31 January, at the invitation of the Government.<\/p>\n<p>The trip will include conversations with Government officials, leading national scientists and academics, and include field visits related to sustainable water use.<\/p>\n<p>In New Delhi, he will meet with External Affairs Minister, Dr. S. Jaishankar. They are expected to discuss ongoing priorities of the General Assembly and India\u2019s engagement with the GA.<\/p>\n<p>The President will also visit India\u2019s G20 Secretariat.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si\u2019s official visit coincides with the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi\u2019s assassination and Martyrs\u2019 Day, which the President will mark by laying a wreath at Raj Ghat.<\/p>\n<p>Among his other public appearances in New Delhi, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will give a public address at the Indian Council of World Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>He will have field visits, including in Bengaluru, where he is expected to visit a water project site. The President will also interact with national scientists and academics at the Indian Institute of Science.<\/p>\n<p>While in India, the President will also meet with the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Resident Coordinator, Mr. Shombi Sharp.<\/p>\n<p>Costs of the visit are covered by the Government and the OPGA Trust Fund.<\/p>\n<p>You have a press release in English and Hindi with more details: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3DhmkPg\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/3DhmkPg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GENERAL COMMITTEE <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turning to his activities today, President K\u0151r\u00f6si hosted an informal meeting of the General Committee. This includes the President of the General Assembly, the 21 Vice-Presidents, and the Chairpersons of the six Main Committees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MIDDLE INCOME COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵTRIES <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, the PGA will participate in the handover from Colombia to Morocco of the Presidency of the Like-Minded Group in support of Middle-Income Countries.<\/p>\n<p>Middle-Income Countries are home to 75 per cent of the world\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, the President is expected to announce that he will hold a high-level meeting during this GA session, on middle-income countries, with a focus on the environmental pillar of sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>I will share his remarks once delivered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PERMANENT OBSERVERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also on the agenda today, the President will meet with the Permanent Observers to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ \u2013 these representatives include the African Union, for example, the League of Arab States and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BILATERALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In terms of bilaterals, the President will meet with Mr. P\u00e4r Liljert, Director of IOM in NY, and Mr. Jonathan Prentice, Head of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Network on Migration Secretariat<\/p>\n<p>He will also meet with Ambassador Munir Akram, the Permanent Representative of Pakistan. The topics of discussion will include Islamophobia Day, which is observed on 15 March each year, and the Summit of the Future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SETON HALL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looking to tomorrow, the President will be in New Jersey tomorrow afternoon meeting with students and faculty at Seton Hall. He will give a public lecture on the work of the General Assembly, his motto and priorities for the resumed 77<sup>th<\/sup> session. This will be webcast live on the University\u2019s webpage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked if the meeting with the Permanent Observers is one-on-one or in a group.
