Third Committee <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si this morning addressed the Third Committee \u2013 which is the Committee dealing with human rights in the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He presented members with three asks.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First \u2013 to make their resolutions understandable. He asked them to be able to explain the relevance of the resolutions, of their work and how it is contributing to making the world a better place \u2013 in one minute. He said quote \u201cTrue relevance shall be boiled down to sixty seconds in a time of crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Second \u2013 he asked members to listen and engage with one another. He noted that for many this will be the first session of in-person negotiations in the Committee. This is an opportunity to listed to each other. The essence of diplomacy, the President said, is human relations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And third – President K\u0151r\u00f6si urged members to view their work through the lens of crisis management and transformation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He told the Committee that their role is to ensure that the rights of all <\/em>people are respected: Regardless of gender, race, belief or political affiliation. Regardless of ethnicity, language, sexual orientation and gender identity or migration status.<\/p>\n

Sixth Committee <\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

President K\u0151r\u00f6si also addressed the sixth committee \u2013 which deals with all things legal in the General Assembly.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He encouraged members to use law as a force of good, of sustainable development, of justice and of positive change.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He also spoke about the importance of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter and international law.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Quote \u201cAs your delegations have reconfirmed it yesterday, after a two-days long debate in the General Assembly, the purposes and principles underlying the Charter of the United<\/p>\n

Nations and international law remain solid and universal. They are an indispensable foundation for fostering peace and security, economic prosperity, and the full respect of human rights for all nations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President went on to say that he reaffirmed his pledge to defend the Charter and its values.<\/p>\n

Bilaterals<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In terms of bilaterals today, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will meet with Nassir Al-Nasser, who among many roles, was the President of the 66th<\/sup> session in 2012.<\/p>\n

The Spokesperson was asked if President K\u0151r\u00f6si spoke with Prime Minister Orb\u00e1n after yesterday\u2019s vote on the Emergency Special Session. The Spokesperson said no, not to her knowledge.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Spokesperson was asked in the context of Greek and Turkish relations, whether the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ stands by Article 51 of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter in accordance with a country\u2019s right to self-defense. The Spokesperson responded by email that all Member States should respect the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter and International Law. It is not up to the President to interpret Article 51.<\/p>\n
