EMERGENCY SPECIAL SESSION<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to start today by looking ahead to next week.<\/p>\n

The General Assembly will resume the 11th<\/sup> Emergency Special Session on Monday, 10 October, at 3PM ET.<\/p>\n

This will be the 12th<\/sup> plenary meeting of the Emergency Special Session.<\/p>\n

The Permanent Representatives of Ukraine and Albania requested the resumption, in accordance with resolution ES-11\/3 of 7 April 2022.<\/p>\n

Given the Emergency Special Session, there will not be a formal General Assembly meeting related to the Veto Initiative.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

YOUTH <\/strong><\/p>\n

Turning back to today.<\/p>\n

President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si met this morning with more than 30 accredited Youth Delegates from Member States.<\/p>\n

This was an informal dialogue to discuss how to ensure young people actively participate in the work of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

One of the points that the President reiterated was that the delegates are here, they already have a spot at the table, and they need to use it. They need to be active and they are expected to be active participants with the Member States.<\/p>\n

FOURTH COMMITTEE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Later this morning, President K\u0151r\u00f6si addressed the First Committee, which is the Disarmament and International Security Committee.<\/p>\n

He reminded members that our times are far from ordinary. We are confronted with unprecedented interlinked crises. The business-as-usual approach and postponing actions is becoming extremely dangerous.<\/p>\n

He noted that there are some 30 armed conflicts around the world. Of these, Ukraine is the most consequential, with impacts felt in every country.<\/p>\n

One of the questions the President posed to Member States is whether the accelerating arms race is improving security and well-being.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn nuclear threats, we simply must not allow international tensions to escalate to the point of no return. We cannot afford to undermine the credibility of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the nuclear disarmament architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n
