COMMITTEES <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Main Committees of the General Assembly are starting their work today.<\/p>\n

The First Committee \u2013 which is Disarmament and International Security.<\/p>\n

The Second Committee \u2013 Economic and Financial.<\/p>\n

The Third Committee \u2013 Social, Humanitarian and Cultural.<\/p>\n

And the Special Political and Decolonization Committee \u2013 which is the Fourth Committee.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

OHCHR<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was asked yesterday about the Third Committee and press briefings.<\/p>\n

For its human rights-related work, the Third Committee will hear from and interact with a record number of 70 experts, <\/strong>including chairs of treaty bodies, special rapporteurs and independent experts, chairs of investigative bodies and working groups.<\/p>\n

Press briefings with some of those experts will begin the second week in October \u2013 likely around the 14th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Those briefings are organized by OHCHR.<\/p>\n

My colleague, Laura Gelbert in the OHCHR NY office can answer any questions.<\/p>\n

PGA\u2019s AGENDA<\/strong><\/p>\n

In terms of President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si\u2019s schedule today.<\/p>\n

He has a number of bilaterals. Among them with Ambassador Michel Xavier Biang of Gabon, the President of the Security Council for October.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

YOUTH DIALOGUE <\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking ahead to next week, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will hold an informal dialogue with youth delegates from Missions, on Tuesday, 4 October.<\/p>\n

The meeting will be an opportunity to discuss how young people can effectively participate in the work of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.<\/p>\n

This is going to be the first informal youth-focused meeting of the 77th<\/sup> session.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

QUESTIONS <\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Spokesperson was asked about the Veto Initiative and the Emergency Special Session. The Spokesperson said that Member States can choose to reopen the Emergency Special Session whether or not there is a related P5 veto in the Security Council. If there is a veto by the P5 in the Security Council, the General Assembly would convene within 10 days of the veto a formal meeting \u2013 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵLESS the General Assembly is meting in an emergency special session on the same situation.<\/p>\n

The Spokesperson was asked about reports of internet blackout in Iran. The Spokesperson said that the President called for respecting the rights and freedom of expression \u2013 this applies online and offline, peaceful assembly, and association.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
