{"id":251170,"date":"2023-03-10T13:10:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-10T18:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=251170"},"modified":"2023-03-10T13:24:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-10T18:24:11","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-10-march-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/03\/10\/noon-briefing-highlights-10-march-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 10 March 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Friday, 10 March 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ISLAMOPHOBIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly today addressed a high-level event on Islamophobia, organized by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si spoke alongside Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who will address you here within the hour about today\u2019s event, and alongside Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, as you heard from Stephane.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, the President noted that the General Assembly resolution creating the International Day to Combat Islamophobia was adopted last year, and speaks about the need for a global dialogue to encourage tolerance and peace.<\/p>\n<p>A dialogue that should be based, to quote the resolution, \u201con respect for human rights and the diversity of religions and beliefs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The President said that as a believer, he \u201cwholeheartedly\u201d supports this notion.<\/p>\n<p>The noted that Islamophobia is rooted in xenophobia, which he defines as fear of whatever is unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>This is part of a broader resurgence of ethnonationalism, supremacy, stigma and hate that are targeting religious, national, ethnic and linguistic communities, he added.<\/p>\n<p>Quote \u201cIt is on us all to reverse these trends by embracing diversity and safeguarding the rights of minorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President pointed to some of the ways that this could be done, through interfaith and intercultural exchanges, working with social media companies to curb hate speech and disinformation, and to include women\u2019s voices in discussions around Islamophobia\u2026 such as through events like the one organized by Pakistan on Wednesday in which the President took part on \u201cWomen in Islam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President\u2019s full remarks are online and in your inbox: http:\/\/bit.ly\/PGAIDCI<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>BILATERALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In terms of today\u2019s bilaterals\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The President had a virtual meeting this morning with Ms. Anik\u00f3 Raisz, the Hungarian Secretary of State who will be heading her national delegation to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Water Conference.<\/p>\n<p>The President also met with the Chairperson of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Committee on World Food Security, Ferrero y de Loma-Osorio.<\/p>\n<p>He is also meeting today Ms. Eileen Cronin, Chair of the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU), which is a subsidiary body of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>As well as with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵDP Independent Evaluation Office Director Oscar Garcia. One is the mandated outcome, which will consist of a summary of proceedings that will be presented by the Office of the President of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The other is the Water Action Agenda that will hopefully innovate and transform. And that consists of commitments, pledges and actions.
