{"id":252425,"date":"2023-04-20T14:42:27","date_gmt":"2023-04-20T18:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=252425"},"modified":"2023-04-20T14:42:27","modified_gmt":"2023-04-20T18:42:27","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-20-april-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/04\/20\/noon-briefing-highlights-20-april-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 20 April 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si <\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Thursday, 20 April 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n<strong>SUDAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\nPresident Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si joins the call for an immediate temporary ceasefire in Sudan, to coincide with Eid al-Fitr.<br \/>\nThe President is very worried for the people in Sudan, and those trying to deliver aid in the country.<br \/>\nThis pause would be a first step towards a longer-term peaceful transition in Sudan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIVIL SOCIETY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si today held his second townhall with civil society.<br \/>\nAs he said in his opening remarks, his aim is to bring the \u201coutside\u201d in, to improve the quality of policymaking by ensuring that decision-makers have a better understanding of the issues they are creating policies for.<br \/>\nToday\u2019s focus is on the SDG Summit in September and how to get the Sustainable Development Goals back on track\u2026 to stop them from actually moving backwards.<br \/>\nIn his remarks, the President used mentimeter, which is an interactive software.<br \/>\nHe actually held a conversation with about 100 of the civil society representatives before actually opening it up for a Q&amp;A.<br \/>\nThe President asked civil society representatives how they would define success for the SDG summit, what they see as the biggest challenges to achieving the SDGs, and what transformative changes are necessary to get the Goals back on track.<br \/>\nYou have that interaction as part of the President\u2019s opening remarks, in your inboxes and online: https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/04\/20\/pga-remarks-on-his-second-townhall-with-civil-society\/<br \/>\nThe townhall was organized with support from the Department of Global Communications, DESA, the SDG Action Campaign and OHCHR.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INDIGENOUS PEOPLES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Later today, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will convene an informal interactive hearing with Indigenous Peoples on enhanced participation in the United Nations.<br \/>\nHe is expected to invite Member States to reflect on innovative and appropriate ways in which Indigenous Peoples\u2019 right to participate can be respected.<br \/>\nAnd to make the case that greater participation will only augment the legitimacy of decisions adopted at the United Nations \u2013 and assist Member States in their implementation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CHINESE LANGUAGE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tonight, the President will mark Chinese Language Day, by visiting the calligraphy and painting exhibit \u201cThe Highest Virtue Resembles Water\u201d and the calligraphy exhibition \u201cAll Things Governed by the Laws of Nature\u201d at the South Wall and Curved Wall area.<br \/>\nHe will be joined by Ambassador Zhang Jun, the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations.<br \/>\nThe President is expected to make remarks, and those will be shared with you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPANISH LANGUAGE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And as you also heard from Farhan, this weekend is Spanish Language Day.<br \/>\nPresident K\u0151r\u00f6si has a video message for the day.<br \/>\nThese language days are an opportunity to commemorate and cherish multilingualism, what President Korosi\u2019s calls \u201ca must for successful negotiations in the United Nations General Assembly\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WEEK AHEAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday 24 April<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Among the many events on Monday, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will participate in an interactive dialogue with Member States on \u201cHarmony with Nature\u201d.<br \/>\nThat will be held at 10AM ET in the Trusteeship Chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Monday is also the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday 25 April<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will deliver opening remarks at the 2023 United Nations Economic and Social Council Youth Form under the theme, \u201cAccelerating the COVID-19 recovery and full implementation of the 2030 Agenda with and for youth\u201d. That\u2019s at 9AM in the Trusteeship Chamber.<\/p>\n<p>Also on Tuesday, in the GA Hall, at 10AM ET there will be a plenary meeting on a presentation on the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism on Syria.<\/p>\n<p>At 3PM ET, there will be a briefing by the Secretary-General on his Special Edition report on \u201cProgress towards the Sustainable Development Goals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday 26 April<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In GA Hall starting at 10AM ET, Member States will take part in the first debate on the use of the veto.
