Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/em>,<\/em> President of the 77th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n —-<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Informal interactive dialogue with Indigenous Peoples \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n 20 April 2023 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(As delivered) \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Chair,<\/p>\n Indigenous representatives,<\/p>\n Excellencies,<\/p>\n Friends,<\/p>\n Once again, let me thanks Brennen Ferguson of the Tuscarora Nation for his beautiful words and beautiful welcome. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n We have waited a long time to convene this third interactive hearing.<\/p>\n We are not only picking up a conversation that started in the seventy-first session of the General Assembly and was postponed due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n We are revisiting a cause brought before the League of Nations 100 years ago by Chief Cayuga Deskaheh.<\/p>\n The Chief travelled to Geneva representing the Six Nations in Canada to advocate for their rights to live freely on their lands, to practice their religion and to follow their own law.<\/p>\n In 1923, his requests were denied. The door was closed in what he called \u201ccruel indifference.\u201d<\/p>\n Since this sad chapter, the United Nations has gradually opened the door \u2013 and broadened the participation of Indigenous Peoples in its work.<\/p>\n We are here today to continue building on these efforts and fulfil promises made in the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, recognizing participation not only as a right, but also as a valuable contribution to work at the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ<\/p>\n And two, in the 2014 outcome document of the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, to organize consultations on enabling participation of indigenous peoples\u2019 representatives and institutions in relevant Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ meetings.<\/p>\n I am convinced that no government has a monopoly on wisdom.<\/p>\n It is essential that, throughout the negotiation processes, we should consider the views of Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n Particularly when it comes to managing natural resources, preserving cultural and religious values, and taking decisions effecting the lives of Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n While Member States are the decision-makers as an inter-governmental organization, Indigenous Peoples have an opportunity to significantly shape those decisions.<\/p>\n Yet, we need to answer critical questions of access and participation that have eluded those before us and made the United Nations a difficult place to navigate, and I have to acknowledge that difficulty.<\/p>\n The discussions used to turn around the following issues:<\/p>\n I acknowledge that Indigenous Peoples are not always organized as NGOs \u2013 and that is an issue which can give rise to confusion for some.<\/p>\n As Indigenous Peoples, you express yourselves in great diversity \u2013 as federations, autonomous governments, parliaments, and community-based decision-making bodies.<\/p>\n While some Member States formally recognize these institutions, others may not.<\/p>\n In some cases you might even be part of the Governments. Or, I know some, you might even lead national Governments.<\/p>\n I take note of the 2020 outcome of the Dialogue Meeting in Quito to establish a coordinating body of indigenous representatives.<\/p>\n I invite all participants today to reflect on innovative and appropriate ways in which indigenous peoples\u2019 right to participate can be respected and enhanced.<\/p>\n Greater participation will only augment the legitimacy of decisions adopted at the United Nations \u2013 and assist Member States in their implementation.<\/p>\n But we may not limit our discussions today to the issues of access.<\/p>\n The issue is not only about the participation, the big take is how to contribute to the transformation of this world that we all need.<\/p>\n In the wise words of the Dakota, \u201cWe will be known forever by the tracks we leave\u201d.<\/p>\n It is my hope that we do our part today to close regretful chapters of history and begin writing a new chapter \u2013 one of rightful participation and inclusion, and shared wisdom.<\/p>\n I am here to listen \u2013 and to help turn the page.<\/p>\n We are, after all, in the House of \u201cwe the peoples.\u201d The first three words of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter.<\/p>\n Let us ensure the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ lives up to its ideals to its Charter and to the notion of leaving no one behind.<\/p>\n Thank you very much.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly —- Informal interactive dialogue with Indigenous Peoples \u00a0 20 April 2023 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(As delivered) \u00a0 Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Chair, Indigenous […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":361,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly\r\n\r\n----\r\n\r\nMessage on the 75th anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO)\r\n\r\n7 April 2023\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this World Health Day, I congratulate WHO on its 75th anniversary.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOver the course of its history, WHO has contributed to landmark achievements in public health, including the eradication of smallpox, the near eradication of polio and the expansion of childhood immunization, saving millions of lives.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nMore recently, WHO has played a key role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and helped galvanise the most complex vaccination campaign in history. Time and again, WHO has proved that investing in science lies at the heart of reaching our objective of a healthy and prosperous future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHowever, the pandemic has disrupted essential health services in most of the countries, shortened life expectancy, and halted progress towards universal health coverage.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHalfway through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we must redouble our efforts to achieve its goals. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAs we prepare for the upcoming high-level meetings on health in the General Assembly, let us seize this opportunity to reconfirm our collective pledges and chart new pathways for a healthy and sustainable future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this day and every day, let us commit to achieve Health for All.","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[111],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-252427","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-statements","et-doesnt-have-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard"],"yoast_head":"\n\n
