Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/em>,<\/em> President of the 77th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n —-<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Chinese Language Day <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n 20 April 2023 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(As prepared) \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Dear friends, good evening.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is a pleasure to join you for this celebration of Chinese Language Day.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I thank the organizers for inviting me to help launch the Day\u2019s festivities, under the theme <\/span>\u201cChinese wisdom for a green world.\u201d<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The works of the calligraphers and artists <\/span>on display are a reminder that language \u2013 in its many forms and reflections \u2013 is a bridge to understanding. <\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I am struck by the message vividly conveyed in these works of art: that of harmony with nature. <\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is a concept that has been intertwined with China\u2019s agricultural civilization for thousands of years.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The philosopher Zhuang-zi is well known for saying: \u201cThe universe and I come into being together; I and everything therein are one\u201d.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I learned a long time ago that Chinese characters were derived from pictograms portraying the natural world.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Many of them incorporate elements of Chinese philosophy and reflect the deep connection between language, nature and society.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For example, the compound for \u201charmony\u201d combines the characters for \u201cmouth\u201d and \u201cgrain\u201d \u2013 invoking an image of people sharing a meal and highlighting the importance of human interaction.<\/p>\n I think it also contains a lesson about abundance and scarcity \u2013 and their effects on our societies across the globe.<\/p>\n To me, this interpretation is at the heart of why we, as an international community, must adjust the ways we consume and produce \u2013 do more and better with less.<\/p>\n In my reading, this character also reminds us that we cannot fall out of harmony with our natural world.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If we want to achieve that balance, we will need all the knowledge we can have, all the will we can muster and \u2013 like these artists had \u2013 a dose of creativity to spark transformational change.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n With the seventy-seventh session having passed the midway milestone, we are in an important phase of our work in the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We have to deal with a wide range of challenges that can only be tackled jointly. <\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n To do so, we must \u201clove the people, and cherish all lives,\u201d as ancient Chinese philosopher Mencius aptly said.<\/p>\n With thousands of years of accumulated knowledge behind it, China is in a fortunate position to supply the world with the goods that are needed most \u2013 solutions.<\/p>\n I look forward to China\u2019s continued contribution of wisdom, resources and solutions to our joint quest.<\/p>\n The quest for harmony between peoples \u2013 and between people and planet.<\/p>\n Happy Chinese Language Day to all, and I thank you.<\/p>\n Xie Xie.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly —- Chinese Language Day 20 April 2023 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0(As prepared) \u00a0 Dear friends, good evening. \u00a0 It is a pleasure to […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":361,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly\r\n\r\n----\r\n\r\nMessage on the 75th anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO)\r\n\r\n7 April 2023\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this World Health Day, I congratulate WHO on its 75th anniversary.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOver the course of its history, WHO has contributed to landmark achievements in public health, including the eradication of smallpox, the near eradication of polio and the expansion of childhood immunization, saving millions of lives.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nMore recently, WHO has played a key role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and helped galvanise the most complex vaccination campaign in history. Time and again, WHO has proved that investing in science lies at the heart of reaching our objective of a healthy and prosperous future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHowever, the pandemic has disrupted essential health services in most of the countries, shortened life expectancy, and halted progress towards universal health coverage.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHalfway through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we must redouble our efforts to achieve its goals. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAs we prepare for the upcoming high-level meetings on health in the General Assembly, let us seize this opportunity to reconfirm our collective pledges and chart new pathways for a healthy and sustainable future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this day and every day, let us commit to achieve Health for All.","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[111],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-252431","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-statements","et-doesnt-have-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard"],"yoast_head":"\n
