{"id":252540,"date":"2023-05-01T12:47:38","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T16:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=252540"},"modified":"2023-05-01T12:49:21","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T16:49:21","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-1-may-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/05\/01\/noon-briefing-highlights-1-may-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 1 May 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Monday, 1 May 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>JORDAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si is in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>His first stop in Jordan was the Zaatari refugee camp, which houses some 80,000 refugees from Syria.<\/p>\n<p>I spoke to the President in the past hour and he said the visit was \u201cvery moving\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said the conditions are very modest, but he was very encouraged by the people he met, especially the young people.<\/p>\n<p>The President said that he could see a lot of effort from the Government of Jordan, as well as Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ agencies, to keep that hope alive.<\/p>\n<p>We will share more information, including videos and photos, on the President\u2019s social media accounts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BAHRAIN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the weekend, the President was in Bahrain, where he had a number of high-level meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Among them, he was received by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa.<\/p>\n<p>The President commended King Hamad for Bahrain\u2019s transformative and forward thinking leadership on sustainability, mediation, women\u2019s empowerment, and the coexistence in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the President walked down the \u201ccoestinace road\u201d in Manama, and witnessed a Mosque, Ma\u2019atam, Hindu Temple, &amp; Jewish Synagogue stand side by side in harmony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GENDER CAMPAIGN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today is May Day.<\/p>\n<p>As such, in the spirit of creating a safe work environment, President K\u0151r\u00f6si is joining with Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women on a campaign to rid Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ work spaces of sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p>You might recall that President K\u0151r\u00f6si is an International Gender Champion.<\/p>\n<p>As one of his goals as Champion, he has made the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ training on gender and prevention of sexual harassment broadly available.<\/p>\n<p>Launching today, is a campaign to encourage staff at Permanent Missions to complete the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ trainings on gender and the prevention of sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p>The President has a social media message on it saying that he invites \u201cPermanent Missions to join a pledge to complete Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ training courses on gender equality and the prevention of sexual harassment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quote \u201cWe have to lead by example @Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ if we are to achieve gender equality around the world by 2030.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1653055610693222400\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1653055610693222400<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women Executive Director Sima Bahous has also tweeted supporting the initiative: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unwomenchief\/status\/1653049524938473473\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/unwomenchief\/status\/1653049524938473473<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You will likely see many other leaders from the wider Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ community and the Permanent Missions showing their support and hopefully carrying this forward.<\/p>\n<p>This phase of the campaign runs until the end of June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MONTH AHEAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let me highlight some of the key events that will be happening this month, related to official events in the General Assembly and the President\u2019s schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starting on Monday, 8 May and Tuesday, 9 May, in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, <\/strong>there will be interactive multistakeholder hearings on the upcoming high-level health-related meetings.<\/p>\n<p>On 8 May at 3PM, there will be an opening segment for the hearing on the Fight against Tuberculosis. Participating will be the President of the General Assembly K\u0151r\u00f6si, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and Dr. Tedros, the Director-General of WHO.<\/p>\n<p>There will then be panel discussions.<br \/>\nThe closing segment will hear from the two General Assembly co-facilitators who are working on the high-level meeting on Tuberculosis \u2013 that\u2019s Ambassador Bakhtiyor Ibragimov, Permanent Representative of Uzbekistan to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, and Ambassador Krzysztof Szczerski, Permanent Representative of Poland to the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. The third speakers will be Ms. Maurine Murenga, TB\/HIV survivor, Coordinator of TB Women.<\/p>\n<p>Then Tuesday at 10AM, will be the multistakeholder hearing on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.<\/p>\n<p>Participating will be the President of the General Assembly K\u0151r\u00f6si, Director-General of WHO, Dr. Tedros, and Ms. Joy Phumaphi, the Co-Chair of the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board.<\/p>\n<p>Then there will be panel discussions.<\/p>\n<p>The closing will be by the two GA co-facilitators for the high=level meeting this September. Ambassadodr Gilad Erdan, Permanent Representative of Israel and Ambassador\u00a0 Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday at 3PM, the multistakaholder on Universal Health Coverage.<\/p>\n<p>The opening will the President of the General Assembly Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, Dr. Tedros, the Director-General of WHO, and Ms. Gabriela Cuevas Barron, the Co-Chair of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHC2030 Steering Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The opening segment will be followed by panel discussions.And the closing segment will be the two GA co-facilitators working on this high-level meeting in September: Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations and Ambassador Suriya Chindawongse, Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p><em>Related website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/03\/28\/letter-from-the-president-of-the-un-general-assembly-health-multi-stakeholder-hearings-concept-notes-programme\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/03\/28\/letter-from-the-president-of-the-un-general-assembly-health-multi-stakeholder-hearings-concept-notes-programme\/<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, 11 May, in the Trusteeship Council Chamber\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be an informal dialogue on Middle Income Countries.<\/p>\n<p>The theme is \u201cAccelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in middle-income countries, with a focus on the environmental dimension\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The aim is to take stock of the gaps and challenges of middle-income countries in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and promote implementation of the SDGs through practical, evidence- and science-based solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be in-person and webcast on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ WebTV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friday, 12 May, in the Trusteeship Council Chamber\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be the interactive dialogue with the candidate for the Presidency of the 78<sup>th<\/sup> session.<\/p>\n<p>This will be held ahead of the election of the new President on 1 June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday 16 May, in the General Assembly Hall\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be a plenary meeting (debate) on the \u201cZone of peace, trust and cooperation of Central Asia\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, 18 May and Friday, 19 May, in the General Assembly Hall\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There will be a high-level meeting on the midterm review of the Sendai Framework.<\/p>\n<p>The theme is \u201cWorking Together to Reduce Risk for a Resilient Future\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There will be an opening segment on Thursday from 10 until 11AM ET, then plenary discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Friday will be multistakeholder panels and a closing segment.<\/p>\n<p>I will share the detailed plan with you, once confirmed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wednesday, 24 May\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are planning a special event on the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n<p>This International Year was proclaimed by the General Assembly in December 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The International Year will include hundreds of national and international events, starting with this opening event, which is going to be organized on the theme of \u201cA change for society to build on sciences for sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MORNING DIALOGUES<\/p>\n<p>The President will also hold two Morning Dialogues \u2013 these are the small discussions with Member States under Chatham House rules.<\/p>\n<p>One on 12 May, on the theme of rights and responsibilities in a world in crises.<\/p>\n<p>The other on 30 May, on the theme of \u201cHow to renew trust in delivering on the SDGs\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>INFORMAL CONSULTATIONS and INFORMAL MEETINGS<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly will also hold informal consultations and informal meetings. The Spokesperson said her overview includes official General Assembly meeting and events organized by the President of the General Assembly.
