{"id":252605,"date":"2023-05-02T12:48:26","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T16:48:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=252605"},"modified":"2023-05-02T12:48:26","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T16:48:26","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-2-may-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/05\/02\/noon-briefing-highlights-2-may-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 2 May 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Tuesday, 2 May 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PRESS FREEDOM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Staring with World Press Freedom Day.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si is a signatory to a joint statement with the president of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO General Conference, Santiago Irazabal Mour\u00e3o; ECOSOC President Lachezara Stoeva; and the President of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Human Rights Council, V\u00e1clav B\u00e1lek.<\/p>\n<p>The statement calls upon all Member States to promote, protect and fulfill the right of freedom of opinion and expression.<\/p>\n<p>Quote \u201cIt is time to create and maintain, in law and in practice, a safe and enabling environment for journalists to perform their work independently and without undue interference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The statement also notes that\u00a0the nurturing of a political culture based on respect and tolerance of divergent opinions expressed through various channels of communication, including the press and the media, is a collective benefit that contributes to the advancement of our societies.<\/p>\n<p>And so, the four senior Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ officials signed to the statement urge Member States, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ system, regional organisations, civil society, and all stakeholders to safeguard the right to freedom of opinion and expression as a basis for tackling the interlocking crises that the world faces.<\/p>\n<p>You will have a copy of that statement later today. The statement will be presented at today\u2019s press freedom event at 2:30PM, and is embargoed until that time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>JORDAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turning to his officials travels\u2026<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si is in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>Today he met with Jordan\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi.<\/p>\n<p>Among the topics discussed was the situation in Syria and efforts to support the people displaced by the conflict.<\/p>\n<p>The President also visited a facility run by Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KUWAIT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President will head tomorrow to Kuwait, at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n<p>During the visit, the President is expected to highlight his priorities for the 77<sup>th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly, and the importance of multilateralism and international rules-based system in addressing global crises.
