class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Madam Deputy Secretary-General,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Madam Moderator,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Assistant Director General,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Excellencies,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to this landmark hearing on Universal Health Coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">We are here to discuss one of the most pressing issues of our time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">In 2019, world leaders gathered in this very room to endorse an ambitious Political Declaration which reaffirmed their commitment to achieve UHC by 2030.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Universal Health Coverage means that everyone, without discrimination, can access the health services they need without fear of financial ruin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">The UHC concept places special emphasis on women, children, those in need and the most vulnerable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Thus, UHC is not only about health, but about social inclusion, gender equality, poverty eradication, and the protection of human dignity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Martin Luther King once said that \u201cof all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">The right to health is a fundamental human right.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Yet, billions in the world still lack a reliable access to basic and essential health services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Meanwhile, health expenses push tens of millions of people into bankruptcy or heavy indebtedness every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Today\u2019s meeting comes at a very special moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Just a few months after the Declaration was adopted, the most extreme health crisis in recent history broke out \u2014 the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">It unveiled the vast disparities in access to healthcare \u2014 and its effects also visibly deepened inequalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Now it is official that we have the global pandemic behind us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">But we should always draw lessons from complex crises like the one caused by COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">The devastation brought about by the pandemic serves as a stern reminder that when health is at risk, everything is at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">When anybody is at risk, everybody is at risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">That providing health is not a money pit but a smart long-term investment in sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">The achievement of SDG 3 is indivisible from the rest of the 2030 Agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">The pursuit of UHC for all truly encapsulates the interconnectedness of every challenge we face and every solution we have to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">When it comes to our goals, we are far off-track.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">If we want to achieve our targets in time, we have to change gear \u2014 but we also have to change the whole game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">As a part of that, we should give UHC its full due.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">We must recognize that it is not just a political commitment but also a tool for socio-economic prosperity and the reduction of inequalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">And we should keep in mind that, ultimately, the aim of Universal Health Coverage is to leave no one behind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Dear Friends,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">We live in crisis times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">To tackle the many challenges we face, we have to mobilize all of our capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">We cannot rely only on what governments know and wish to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">We need each and every stakeholder on board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">We need all of you on board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">That is why we turned to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">That is why we asked you to bring here all your expertise, all your experience, ideas and suggestions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Put simply, we need your wisdom and commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Soon, the floor will be yours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Together with the representatives of the Member States, I am eager to listen to your views on how we can have a world where health is not a privilege anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-IE\">Thank you very this World Health Day, I congratulate WHO on its 75th anniversary.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOver the course of its history, WHO has contributed to landmark achievements in public health, including the eradication of smallpox, the near eradication of polio and the expansion of childhood immunization, saving millions of lives.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nMore recently, WHO has played a key role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and helped galvanise the most complex vaccination campaign in history.
