{"id":253596,"date":"2023-05-30T18:05:41","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T22:05:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=253596"},"modified":"2023-05-30T18:05:41","modified_gmt":"2023-05-30T22:05:41","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-30-may-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/05\/30\/noon-briefing-highlights-30-may-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 30 May 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Tuesday, 30 May 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PERMANENT FORUM FOR PEOPLE OF AFRICAN DESCENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today is the start of the second session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si noted that people of African descent have endured more than 500 years of systematic discrimination and hardship.<\/p>\n<p>He said that racism and xenophobia continue to spoil our communities.<\/p>\n<p>The hatred and violence that people of African descent experience persists, demanding our collective efforts to eradicate racial violence in all its forms.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed to oppressive and racially violent incarceration systems, inequalities in access to healthcare and exclusion from the workforce.<\/p>\n<p>Quote \u201cwe must do away with these inhumane and shameful inheritances, and we must do it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President pointed to the Permanent Forum for People of African Descent, which will be in session through Friday, serves a critical purpose.<\/p>\n<p>The session opened this morning with a musical, dance and folklore performance by the non-profit Batoto Yetu \u2013 which was created in Harlem in 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Batoto Yetu takes its name from the Swahili works for \u201cour children\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>You have the President\u2019s full remarks online and in your inboxes: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/05\/30\/opening-of-the-second-session-of-the-permanent-forum-for-people-of-african-descent\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/05\/30\/opening-of-the-second-session-of-the-permanent-forum-for-people-of-african-descent\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MINORITIES <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, the President will take part in a side event organized by OHCHR, OSCE and the Permanent Missions of North Macedonia and Poland, on preventive diplomacy in the changing landscape of modern conflicts, the role of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and regional organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The President is expected to focus his remarks on minority issues.<\/p>\n<p>You will recall that during Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA last year, he convened the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the 30<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Declaration on the Rights of Minorities<\/p>\n<p>The shared conclusion from that meeting was that after 30 years, we are off track of the implementation of the commitments ensuring minority rights.<\/p>\n<p>The President is expected to reiterate his call today urgently address those shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BILATERALS <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Also today, the President will meet with Ambassador Lana Zaki Nussaibeh, the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates, which will serve as the President of the Security Council for the month of June.<\/p>\n<p>The President will also meet with European Commissioner Jutta Urpilanen. This meeting is expected to touch on upcoming General Assembly events, as well as peace and security issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WEDNESDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looking to tomorrow\u2026<\/p>\n<p>At 10AM ET \u2026 The General Assembly will hold a plenary looking at reports of the Fifth Committee related to financing of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Interim Security Force for Abyei; Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Disengagement Observer Force; and financing of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Mission in South South.<\/p>\n<p>That will be followed by continuation of statements from the High-level meetings on the Sendai Framework.<\/p>\n<p>Starting at 3PM ET\u2026 The President will address the 21<sup>st<\/sup> High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked if the PGA planned to meet with the IAEA Chief. The Spokesperson said that no, not today.
