{"id":253687,"date":"2023-06-01T12:24:21","date_gmt":"2023-06-01T16:24:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=253687"},"modified":"2023-06-01T12:24:21","modified_gmt":"2023-06-01T16:24:21","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-1-june-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/01\/noon-briefing-highlights-1-june-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 1 June 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Thursday, 1 June 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PGA78<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the General Assembly today\u2026 Member States elected by acclamation Mr. Dennis Francis as the President of the 78<sup>th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>In his congratulatory remarks, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si noted that Mr. Francis brings almost 40 years of experience in Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s Diplomatic Service.<\/p>\n<p>His vision for the 78<sup>th<\/sup> session is \u201cPeace, Prosperity, Progress and Sustainability\u201d, which offers a comprehensive view of the work of the General Assembly, given the focus on climate change and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si noted that there are nearly 100 days still left in this session.<\/p>\n<p>He will continue to promote the use of science for a sustainability transformation, namely in the preparations for the SDG Summit during the High-Level Week in September.<\/p>\n<p>The President also called for acting on the gamechangers elaborated by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Water Conference to give answers and solutions to the unfolding water crisis.<\/p>\n<p>And to the 16 negotiating processes, including GA revitalization.<\/p>\n<p>The full remarks are with you: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/01\/pga-remarks-following-the-election-of-pga78-mr-dennis-francis\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/01\/pga-remarks-following-the-election-of-pga78-mr-dennis-francis\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>SEATING ORDER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As is tradition, after the election of the President-elect, the Secretary-General drew a lot to decide the seating arrangements in the General Assembly Hall for the 78<sup>th<\/sup> session.<\/p>\n<p>The first seat will go to North Macedonia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>VICE-PRESIDENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Member States today also elected by acclamation the General Assembly Vice-Presidents for the 78<sup>th<\/sup> session:<\/p>\n<p>African States: Congo, Gambia, Morocco, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia<\/p>\n<p>Asia-Pacific States: Islamic Republic of Iran, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan<\/p>\n<p>Eastern European States: Estonia<\/p>\n<p>Latin American and Caribbean States: Plurinational State of Bolivia, Suriname<\/p>\n<p>Western European and other States: Iceland, Kingdom of the Netherlands<\/p>\n<p>It is these plus the P5 who will make up the Vice-Presidents of the General Assembly for the 78<sup>th<\/sup> session.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SECURTIY COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCIL REFORM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This hour, President K\u0151r\u00f6si is listening in on a roundtable about Security Council reform in the Trusteeship.<\/p>\n<p>This is a side event organized by the Permanent Missions of Brazil, India, South Africa and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA STUDENTS\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, the President will be meeting with Leen Sharqawi and Amhed Abu Daqqa.<\/p>\n<p>These are two Palestinian refugee students, who are studying under Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA.<\/p>\n<p>This is ahead of Friday\u2019s Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA pledging conference.<\/p>\n<p>And you will hear from the students directly tomorrow, at the pledging event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WMO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s PGA election is not the only one in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ community\u2026<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si today congratulated the new head of the World Meteorological Organization, Professor Celeste Saulo \u2013 the first ever woman elected to the role.<\/p>\n<p>The President said in a Tweet that he hopes Prof. Saulo and WMO President Abdulla Al Mandous will prioritize the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Water outcomes and make the water gamechangers a reality.<\/p>\n<p><em>Related tweet: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1664269914901975042\"><em>https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1664269914901975042<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA78<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I also wanted to clarify something that I\u2019ve been seeing in the press that the theme for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA78 is the SDGs. It is not.<\/p>\n<p>The President-elect selects the theme for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA, in consultations with his Office, DGACM and others.<\/p>\n<p>The official theme has not been announced yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked when PGA78 will take office. President K\u0151r\u00f6si will handover to PGA-elect Francis on Tuesday, 5 September.<\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked when the Credentials Committee would be appointed.
