{"id":253693,"date":"2023-06-02T13:26:33","date_gmt":"2023-06-02T17:26:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=253693"},"modified":"2023-06-02T13:57:11","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T17:57:11","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-2-june-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/02\/noon-briefing-highlights-2-june-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 2 June 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Friday, 2 June 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si is convening the annual Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA pledging conference.<\/p>\n<p>You know that Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA is appealing for $1.6 Billion US for programmes and operations in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, President K\u0151r\u00f6si\u2019s noted that Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA will run out of money by September unless funds are immediately disbursed.<\/p>\n<p>At stake are real-life consequences for nearly six million refugees who depend on Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA\u2019s services, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Failure to address this urgent funding crisis will result in the loss of access to healthcare, schooling, food, and water \u2013 for those who need these essential services most.<\/p>\n<p>He called for innovative and transformative solutions.<\/p>\n<p>The President today urged Member States to show robust political and financial will to secure the future of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA\u2019s critical operations and the future of the Palestinian refugees.<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that until a political solution in the Middle East is found, Member States must make good on the commitments in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter and in the 2030 Agenda\u2014ensuring safety, freedom from war, and dignity for all.<\/p>\n<p>The President quoted Ralph Bunche, who as you know received a Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation in the region, who said that a meaningful peace must be translated into food, shelter, health and education \u2013 as well as freedom and human dignity.<\/p>\n<p>And on the topic of education, you heard the importance of getting an education directly from two Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA students &#8211; Leen Sharqawi and Amhed Abu Daqqa.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si met with them yesterday. As you heard them say today \u2013 they were speaking on behalf of their fellow students, presenting their voices to the donors.<\/p>\n<p>As for what is coming out of the pledging conference, I understand that my Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA counterparts will put out a press release later today.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of the breakdown of where the needs are, I will include the pledging conference fact sheet link with my notes today: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/resources\/2023_pledgingconference_factsheet.pdf\">https:\/\/www.unrwa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/content\/resources\/2023_pledgingconference_factsheet.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>President\u2019s remarks: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/02\/pga-remarks-to-the-annual-unrwa-pledging-conference\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/02\/pga-remarks-to-the-annual-unrwa-pledging-conference\/<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>BICYCLE DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Changing gears, tomorrow is World Bicycle Day.<\/p>\n<p>The Day was created by consensus in the General Assembly five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>As you heard from Farhan, there are two events today.<\/p>\n<p>I will highlight them because President K\u0151r\u00f6si is taking part.<\/p>\n<p>This hour, he is at the opening of an exhibit featuring glass bicycles by the Polish bike art project, Glass ReCycles \u2013 in cooperation with the Polish Cultural Institute of New York.<\/p>\n<p>Then at 1:30pm near the Visitors Entrance, the President will join the Permanent Representatives of Bahrain, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Poland, Romania and Turkmenistan<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ WATER CONFERENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will be meeting with some Permanent Ambassadors to discuss the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Water Conference follow up.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder, the President\u2019s summary of the Conference is available on our website.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>WEEK AHEAD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead to next week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday, 5 June,<\/strong> President K\u0151r\u00f6si will take part in marking World Environment Day. This year\u2019s theme is #BeatPlasticPollution.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Nairobi, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Habitat Assembly gets underway. The President will have a pre-recorded message.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday, 6 June,<\/strong> at 10AM, will be the elections for the non-permanent members of the Security Council. Six member states\u2014Algeria, Belarus, Guyana, the Republic of Korea (ROK), Sierra Leone, and Slovenia\u2014are currently running for the five available seats.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a press stakeout in the usual spot, across from the GA Hall. The Economic and Social Council has 54 members:\u00a018 members\u00a0are elected by the General Assembly each year for a three-year term.<\/p>\n<p>I will share the list of vacancies for the 2024-2026 term with you next week.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, there will be a separate election for the ongoing vacancy in the Eastern Europe group, for the 2023-2025 term.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday is also World Oceans Day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked about the President\u2019s views on cycling in the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHQ. The President believes we should all be doing our part for the sustainability transformation.
