WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today is World Environment Day.<\/p>\n

President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si spoke a short time ago at an event about solutions to plastic pollution.<\/p>\n

He congratulated C\u00f4te d’Ivoire, which this year hosts the World Environment Day.<\/p>\n

The President spoke about microplastics and the hazards they pose to us as humans and the environment overall.<\/p>\n

He noted the need to reuse plastics, highlighting that the particles in plastics can be safely reused three times.<\/p>\n

He reiterated a message that you\u2019ve heard from him often \u2013 that we need to move away from a \u201cthrow away\u201d culture into a circular economy.<\/p>\n

One that relies steadfastly on science \u2013 from data collection and policy making to the implementation of best practice.<\/p>\n

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ HABITAT ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in Nairobi, today starts the second session of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Habitat Assembly.<\/p>\n

In a pre-recorded message, President K\u0151r\u00f6si invited Member States to explore how we can ensure that our approach to sustainability transformation better reflects the role of cities in our world.<\/p>\n

He also highlighted three suggestions to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.<\/p>\n

He called for comprehensive data and statistics collection and dissemination.<\/p>\n

He said that governments have to assess risks associated with climate change, such as flooding and freshwater availability.<\/p>\n

But what is most important is a mindset shift, from business-as-usual to a real sustainability transformation.<\/p>\n

This means strengthening the science-policy interface, advancing evidence-based solutions, and approaching our goals holistically.<\/p>\n

INDIA TRAIN CRASH<\/strong><\/p>\n

You would like have seen the statement put out Friday on the train crash in Odisha.<\/p>\n

President K\u0151r\u00f6si sent his heartfelt condolences to the people and the Government of India.<\/p>\n

He said that his thoughts and prayers were with the victims, their families and with the emergency services.<\/p>\n

According to media reports, at least 275 people were killed and more than 1,200 injured in the crash.<\/p>\n

The elections for the non-permanent members of the Security Council will start at 10AM ET.<\/p>\n

Six member states are currently running for the five available seats. Those are Algeria, Belarus, Guyana, the Republic of Korea (ROK), Sierra Leone, and Slovenia.<\/p>\n

Each winning candidate will need a two-thirds majority of those present and voting.<\/p>\n

There will be a press stakeout in the usual spot, across from the GA Hall.<\/p>\n
