style=\"font-weight: 400;text-align: center\"><strong><span data-ogsc=\"black\" data-ogsb=\"white\">12 June 2023 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;text-align: center\"><strong><span data-ogsc=\"black\" data-ogsb=\"white\">(As delivered)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr. Under-Secretary-General,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, let me extend my heartfelt condolences to all whose lives have been affected or upended by the AIDS epidemic and who have lost their loved ones to the disease.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today, we gather for an important purpose \u2013 to assess the progress in the implementation of the Declarations on HIV and AIDS.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">AIDS response is critical to our work in this Hall, because it is indissociable from the realization of the seventeen SDGs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response \u2013 whether in addressing AIDS, or Covid-19 \u2013 is a cornerstone of the 2030 Agenda.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our promising agenda \u2013 in the fulfilment of which we are lagging behind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, there is reason for optimism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Data shows that the global AIDS response has led to remarkable results.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">A diagnosis that was once a death sentence has, through both science and solidarity, been transformed into a manageable chronic health condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Due to anti-retroviral treatment and the use of <strong><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(51, 51, 51)\">pre-exposure prophylaxis<\/span><span data-ogsc=\"rgb(51, 51, 51)\">,<\/span><\/strong> in the last two decades, we have seen infections decrease by 50% and deaths decline by 70%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This life-saving progress stands tall as a testament for the power of multilateralism and international cooperation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">While this progress is exceptional, it is also uneven.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most significant improvements on all fronts of this pandemic happen in countries that choose to invest in their HIV and AIDS responses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In those places, HIV treatment and educational material is readily, and freely, available.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In others, not only is it difficult to acquire, it also remains a serious taboo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is causing these contrasts?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The answer lies with familiar culprits:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faltering political will, persistent gender inequality, insufficient funding, fragile public health systems, and the failure to redress inequalities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dear friends,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The AIDS pandemic is a public health crisis, but the crux of this issue is, ultimately, inequality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s be honest: the breadth of this epidemic has long roots in homophobia, transphobia and discrimination, too.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">And let\u2019s acknowledge that our international community failed to deliver in the early years after the outbreak, because of preconceptions of how the virus spread.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">At that time, AIDS was still \u201cthe disease that is hard to talk about\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As our understanding of the disease shifted, so did our response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">It moved to embrace universality, equity, and inclusiveness \u2013 principles crucial to pandemic preparedness and response.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, we work to make the right to equal access to healthcare a reality for all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">But let us also remember that a humane approach is paramount to building <span data-ogsc=\"black\">trust and unity \u2013 two key components of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV\/AIDS. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are also very concrete measures we can take to better respond to HIV\/AIDS:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">First,<span data-ogsc=\"black\"> by addressing the gaps in HIV prevention, testing and treatment services \u2013 particularly for vulnerable groups;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Second, by ensuring adequate and equitable funding;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Third, by implementing evidence-based programmes;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">Fourth, by using the synergies between AIDS response, broader health goals and the whole 2030 Agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why? Because overlapping and interlocking crises need to be addressed holistically, not as siloed-off issues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">For too many, AIDS is still a life-or-death issue. But it should not be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">I urge Member States and stakeholders to renew their political and financial commitments to ending the pandemic.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span data-ogsc=\"black\">The SDG Summit in September will offer the best opportunity to make ambitious pledges.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I wish you a fruitful meeting today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">I thank you.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly &#8212;- GA plenary meeting on the Implementation of the Declaration of Commitment on HIV\/AIDS and the Political Declaration on HIV\/AIDS [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":361,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly\r\n\r\n----\r\n\r\nMessage on the 75th anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO)\r\n\r\n7 April 2023\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this World Health Day, I congratulate WHO on its 75th anniversary.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOver the course of its history, WHO has contributed to landmark achievements in public health, including the eradication of smallpox, the near eradication of polio and the expansion of childhood immunization, saving millions of lives.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nMore recently, WHO has played a key role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and helped galvanise the most complex vaccination campaign in history.
