Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/em>,<\/em> President of the 77th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n —-<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Thematic Meeting on Multilingualism across the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ System<\/strong><\/p>\n 12 June 2023 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n (As prepared for delivery)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Excellencies,<\/p>\n Mesdames et Messieurs,<\/p>\n Queridos Colegas,<\/p>\n Sobh Bekheir to you all.<\/p>\n This means \u201cgood morning\u201d in Farsi \u2013 the language of Rumi, the 13th<\/sup> century poet who once wrote: \u201cSpeak a new language so that the world will be a new world.\u201d<\/p>\n Rumi\u2019s influence has transcended borders and divides for seven centuries.<\/p>\n With that kind of track record, I\u2019d say he knew a thing or two about multilingualism.<\/p>\n Using someone else\u2019s language is often the key to unlocking breakthroughs.<\/p>\n It can signal a gesture, a friendly intention.<\/p>\n It helps us meet each other halfway.<\/p>\n It can light up our ideas \u2013 and spark a relationship.<\/p>\n Not all languages are spoken. Some are signed. Others are tactile.<\/p>\n But by valuing every language we increase our chances for overcoming doubts.<\/p>\n For building, or, in our times, rebuilding trust.<\/p>\n For making decisions that are meaningful for all.<\/p>\n This is why we meet today: to fathom how we can use multilingualism to broaden our engagement in ways that make a difference.<\/p>\n Le multilinguisme est l\u2019un des tidal wave of global challenges.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n Last year, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on multilingualism.<\/em><\/p>\n It welcomes the use of both official and non-official languages by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Department of Global Communications in its outreach to specific local target audiences.<\/em><\/p>\n It also recognizes the Secretariat\u2019s efforts to use non-official languages \u2013 such as Portuguese, Hindi, Kiswahili and Persian \u2013 in our efforts to leave no one behind.) <\/em><\/p>\n As a multilingual person myself, I applaud these decisions.<\/p>\n In the language of somebody else is enough to break the ice.)<\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n The six thousand languages spoken around the world showcase the strength and richness of our societies.<\/p>\n They all support and enhance our meaningful existence.<\/p>\n We must conserve this ancient tapestry of expression.<\/p>\n This is especially true for languages on the brink of extinction, many of them used by Indigenous Peoples.<\/p>\n As Nobel laureate Octavio Paz so eloquently reminds us: \u201cFor every language that becomes extinct, an image of a man disappears.\u201d<\/p>\n To this I languages that are different from their own, so they can truly appreciate the world around them.) <\/em><\/p>\n \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n At the United Nations, we have to find ways to prioritize resources for multilingual practices.<\/p>\n To use \u2013 and respect the use of \u2013 as many languages as possible here in our organization.<\/p>\n And to always ask: what more can we be doing to reach beyond the walls?<\/p>\n The walls of convention, routine, resignation and \u2013 let\u2019s be frank \u2013 laziness.<\/p>\n With that in mind, I am grateful to the organizers for initiating this
