{"id":254128,"date":"2023-06-13T14:12:50","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T18:12:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=254128"},"modified":"2023-06-13T14:12:50","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T18:12:50","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-13-june-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/13\/noon-briefing-highlights-13-june-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 13 June 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Tuesday, 13 June 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GENDER ADVISORY BOARD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This hour, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si met with his Gender Advisory Board.<\/p>\n<p>They discussed next steps, and linkages with the high-level GA week.<\/p>\n<p>This will likely be the last gender advisory board meeting of the 77<sup>th<\/sup> session.<\/p>\n<p>Taking part in today\u2019s meeting with Ambassador Mitch Fifield, the Permanent Representative of Australia, and one of the co-facilitators leading the process on GA revitalization.<\/p>\n<p>Also invited and attending was PGA-elect Dennis Francis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Turning to the General Assembly\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Today is the opening of the 16th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, as you heard from Stephane.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening remarks, President K\u0151r\u00f6si asked, 15 years on from the Convention\u2019s creation, are we removing the physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for persons with disabilities to participate equally in communal life?<\/p>\n<p>There are barriers still in access to daily life \u2013 such as barriers to food, health care, housing; public facilities \u2013 such as schools, workplaces, courthouses; and barriers to services and technologies.<\/p>\n<p>He called for more data, particularly to ease the digital barriers, to step up action to \u201cleave no one behind\u201d. With the SDG Summit around the corner, it is on the international community to pay attention to these efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The President has been convening Member States and other partners around issues of interest to persons with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday he spoke about the role of \u201ceasy-to-understand communication\u201d to help people with disabilities to engage fully in Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ life.<\/p>\n<p>OPGA also convened a training session on Accessibility and Disability Awareness in April.<\/p>\n<p>And on Thursday, the President said that he looks forward to addressing and chairing the Assembly\u2019s High-Level Meeting on \u201cEqual Access to Justice for All\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The President said that quote \u201cOur sisters and brothers with disabilities are different, not less.\u00a0 And we should know them for their abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Full remarks online and in your inboxes: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/13\/pga-remarks-to-the-16th-session-of-the-conference-of-states-parties-on-the-rights-of-persons-with-disabilities\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/06\/13\/pga-remarks-to-the-16th-session-of-the-conference-of-states-parties-on-the-rights-of-persons-with-disabilities\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SECOND PODCAST EPISODE <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the issue of importance of data\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The second episode of the PGA Fellows\u2019 podcast is out.<\/p>\n<p>Our Fellow Gerard Anapu speaks with Claire Melamed, who leads the Secretariat of the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data. President K\u0151r\u00f6si will have remarks.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will participate in a meeting of the Muslim World League at its international conference on the theme of \u201cForum for Building Bridges Between East and West\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And General Assembly Member States will hold informal consultations on the political declaration for the high-level meeting on the fight against tuberculosis<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked how many people with disabilities are part of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
