translation:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i>My thanks to the Muslim World League and the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Alliance of Civilizations for gathering us today.<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><i>Let me begin by commending the\u00a0<a name=\"x__Hlk137201637\"><\/a>Muslim World League\u00a0for its humanitarian work helping people affected by ecological disasters.]<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Let me also note its launch of the\u00a0<\/span>Faith for Our Planet coalition, uniting grassroots religious communities to fight climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">In a time of protracted conflicts and interlocking crises, faith-based organizations play a critical role in shepherding their followers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">They have an enormous potential \u2013 and equally huge responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Faith brings us together, within our own communities, and across them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">However, teachings merged with impatience and exclusivity can also lead many people astray, turning them to intolerance and extremism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">At any rate, religious organizations have a major capacity to affect human behavior \u2013 at a time when the patterns of our social interaction, consumption and pollution need to fundamentally change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Over two billion people live in conflict zones \u2013 one quarter of humanity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">With lives disrupted, jobs unavailable and schools not functioning, anger is boiling up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Anger which can easily be turned against people who are not and should not be the enemy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">On the other hand, we witness increasing tendencies across the world to move hateful discussions online. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">This is particularly prevalent on social media platforms, and this extremism can lead to deadly real-life consequences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Unfortunately, women and girls are often specifically targeted in the online space.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">So, what can we, as the international community, do to address the root causes of intolerance?<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">What can we do to prevent actions that dehumanize \u201cthe other\u201d: somebody who follows a different faith or no faith?<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">How can we better empower young people to speak up and stand firm against hatred and bigotry?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Let me share with you some of the related actions taken by the General Assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">The Member States are currently discussing the establishment of a Global Digital Compact, which will offer an opportunity to curb online hate. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">In recent months, the Assembly has come together on numerous occasions to reaffirm its commitment to tolerance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Member States debated how to eliminate racial discrimination and Islamophobia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">We commemorated the 30<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of the declaration on rights of minorities to encourage governments to better protect these communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">And the General Assembly discussed the linkages between hate speech and genocide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">There is a clear convergence among Member States that intolerance can lead to violence and extremism. And that we need to do more to promote intercultural and interreligious dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Let\u2019s be bold and ambitious in our visions of a more peaceful future to share.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Let\u2019s hope that pursuing interests will increasingly involve adherence to moral norms as well. Something that not always accompanies diplomatic actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-GB\">And let\u2019s never forget the words of the American theologian Ralph Sockman:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u201cThe test of courage comes when we are in the minority. Time and again, WHO has proved that investing in science lies at the heart of reaching our objective of a healthy and prosperous future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHowever, the pandemic has disrupted essential health services in most of the countries, shortened life expectancy, and halted progress towards universal health coverage.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHalfway through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we must redouble our efforts to achieve its goals. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAs we prepare for the upcoming high-level meetings on health in the General Assembly, let us seize this opportunity to reconfirm our collective pledges and chart new pathways for a healthy and sustainable future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this day and every day, let us commit to achieve Health for All.","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[111],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-254166","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-statements","et-doesnt-have-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.3 -
