Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/em>,<\/em> President of the 77th<\/sup> session of the General Assembly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n —-<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Culture of Peace plenary meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n 14 June 2023 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n (As delivered)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Excellencies,<\/p>\n \n Distinguished delegates,<\/p>\n \n Peace \u2013 and respect for humanity across its great diversity \u2013 are the central mission of the United Nations.<\/p>\n \n Peace is elevated in Article I of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter as both a goal of our collective efforts \u2013 and an essential tool for settling international disputes.<\/p>\n \n It is at the heart of our 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and inherent to our ultimate sense of safety and well-being.<\/p>\n \n Because this is an agenda designed to strengthen peace, and the agenda that requires peace for successful implementation.<\/p>\n \n But today, our core mission is under threat.<\/p>\n \n Dozens of conflicts are raging around the globe.<\/p>\n \n One in six of the world\u2019s 1.8 billion young people lives in a conflict setting, the highest number in 20 years.<\/p>\n \n A staggering 100 million people have been displaced by violence \u2013 more than double the number a decade ago.<\/p>\n \n Not one of us is spared from the effects of today\u2019s cascading crises \u2013 whether around food and climate, or energy and security.<\/p>\n \n It is therefore on all of us to work towards transformation.<\/p>\n \n The arc of humanity is at an inflection point \u2013 and we simply must shift course.<\/p>\n \n To shift away from confrontation to dialogue, and from force to reason.<\/p>\n \n To shift away from war to diplomacy and towards full respect for the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter principles we have pledged to uphold.<\/p>\n \n \u201cPeace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue \u2013 a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, justice,\u201d as Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza wrote in 1670.<\/p>\n \n It is also \u201ca set of values, attitudes, traditions, modes of behavior and ways of life\u201d that Member States agreed to cherish when they adopted the Declaration and Programme of Action.<\/p>\n \n Values that recognize our common humanity, respect sovereignty and independence, reject violence, and uphold human rights.<\/p>\n \n Values of tolerance, solidarity and inclusion that help our societies concentrate the necessary resources on transformation back at home and in our multilateral system.<\/p>\n \n And let me confirm this: whoever thinks that war is a better way to achieve a country\u2019s ambitions than cooperation, has no rightful place in our global community.<\/p>\n \n What will it take to forge peaceful coexistence among peoples, nations, cultures and religions?<\/p>\n \n We need a renewed approach to peace that recognizes the epic scale of the challenges at hand.<\/p>\n \n We must broaden our vision, breaking away from the old, narrow interpretation of interests. And a vision where interests, rights and responsibilities go hand in hand.<\/p>\n \n We should consciously work on rebuilding lost trust.<\/p>\n \n And we need everyone to participate.<\/p>\n \n This means the full inclusion of women in all processes to help prevent, mediate and resolve conflict, and to rebuild societies.<\/p>\n \n This means critical investments in young people, in education and the fight against racism and intolerance.<\/p>\n \n In the General Assembly, this means not allowing short-sighted views to get in the way of vital breakthroughs.<\/p>\n \n This means opening our doors to those who can meaningfully contribute to our mission \u2013 civil society, scientists, experts.<\/p>\n \n Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ is an institution that embodies the notions of cooperation, understanding, good faith, and tolerance.<\/p>\n \n It is where inclusive, open, and genuine global dialogue should take place.<\/p>\n \n To \u201cgive peace a chance.\u201d<\/p>\n \n To create a just, equal, safe and sustainable world for all of us.<\/p>\n \n I thank you.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Csaba\u00a0K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly —- Culture of Peace plenary meeting 14 June 2023 (As delivered) Excellencies, Distinguished delegates, Peace \u2013 and respect for humanity […]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":361,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_et_pb_use_builder":"on","_et_pb_old_content":"Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, President of the 77th session of the General Assembly\r\n\r\n----\r\n\r\nMessage on the 75th anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO)\r\n\r\n7 April 2023\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this World Health Day, I congratulate WHO on its 75th anniversary.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOver the course of its history, WHO has contributed to landmark achievements in public health, including the eradication of smallpox, the near eradication of polio and the expansion of childhood immunization, saving millions of lives.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nMore recently, WHO has played a key role in the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic and helped galvanise the most complex vaccination campaign in history. Time and again, WHO has proved that investing in science lies at the heart of reaching our objective of a healthy and prosperous future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHowever, the pandemic has disrupted essential health services in most of the countries, shortened life expectancy, and halted progress towards universal health coverage.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nHalfway through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, we must redouble our efforts to achieve its goals. \r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAs we prepare for the upcoming high-level meetings on health in the General Assembly, let us seize this opportunity to reconfirm our collective pledges and chart new pathways for a healthy and sustainable future.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOn this day and every day, let us commit to achieve Health for All.","_et_gb_content_width":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[111],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-254167","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-statements","et-doesnt-have-format-content","et_post_format-et-post-format-standard"],"yoast_head":"\n
