WOMEN IN DIPLOMACY<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the hour, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si will participate in a reception for the International Day of Women in Diplomacy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Yesterday, you would have seen a special event organized to commemorate the first official celebration of Women in Diplomacy here at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In his remarks, President K\u0151r\u00f6si said that today\u2019s event is an\u00a0 opportunity to relaunch our collective efforts to promote gender equality in decision-making in diplomacy.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Quote \u201cIf you want someone, who could be the strongest fighter against enemies, you may wish to appoint a man. If the objective is to find solutions and contribute to the well-being, empirical data shows that women leaders perform better.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In his remarks, President K\u0151r\u00f6si spoke about trailblazing women at the signing of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter \u2013 such as Hansa Mehta from India and Minerva Bernardino from the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He also noted that out of the 78 people who have served as Presidents of the General Assembly, only four have been women\u2026 and only about one of four women are Permanent Representatives.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The President thanked the women PRs for their quote \u201cstrong leadership\u201d on challenging talks. Here he is referring to the 16 General Assembly negotiation processes, including on Financing for Development, for example, and the Universal Health Coverage.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The President also noted that in his own office, women make up two-thirds of this Office, and there is gender parity among the PGA Youth Fellows.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking of the Fellows, if you followed the event, you would have seen our Fellow Nathalie Gasaro moderating two panels, a fireside chat with Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.<\/p>\n

COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵTER-TERRORISM WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tonight, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will participate in the opening of the Omani Exhibition \u201cTolerance, Understanding and Co-existence: Oman\u2019s Message of Islam\u201d.<\/p>\n

The exhibit is on the South Wall on the first floor of the Headquarters. That\u2019s the hallway area on the first floor where looks out onto the Peace Bell.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This event is organized on the sidelines of Counter-Terrorism Week<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The President spoke yesterday via a pre-recorded message to the Third Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u00a0High-Level Conference of Heads\u00a0of Counter-Terrorism\u00a0Agencies of Member States.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said that terrorist\u00a0and extremist\u00a0groups continue to\u00a0prey on underdevelopment, inequalities and marginalization, thriving in\u00a0conflict-related\u00a0fragility.\u00a0And often spread by online activity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A multilateral response to the terrorist threat can be the only answer.\u00a0Multilateralism\u00a0can\u00a0work. But it must work\u00a0better.<\/p>\n

BBNJ<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shifting gears.<\/p>\n

You know that the Treaty of the High Seas was\u00a0adopted by consensus <\/strong>yesterday.<\/p>\n

The adoption of this Treaty, also known as \u201cBBNJ\u201d, which stands for Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction), is a landmark achievement, the President said.<\/p>\n

He noted that it lays the foundation for a better stewardship of our seas, ensuring their survival for generations to come.<\/p>\n

The President also praised the agreement for its power of multilateralism.<\/p>\n

The President also praised the work of Ambassador Rena Lee of Singapore, who as the President of the Intergovernmental Conference \u201ccaptained our ship through this historic voyage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tomorrow is International Day of Yoga.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

President K\u0151r\u00f6si will participate in the event, he will be with Prime Minister Modi at the opening.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The President met with Prime Minister Modi during his visit to India in January.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And as I mentioned last week, the President said he is not a yogi, so don\u2019t expect him to contort too much.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Spokesperson was asked whether the President wants the next Secretary-General to be a woman. That is the decision of Member States. President K\u0151r\u00f6si has always been supportive of a woman Secretary-General.<\/p>\n

The Spokesperson was asked when and where the yoga event will take place. The Spokesperson said on the North Lawn of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHQ, and that the event will start at 8AM, with people expected to get there early.<\/p>\n
