{"id":254966,"date":"2023-07-18T14:08:51","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T18:08:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=254966"},"modified":"2023-07-18T14:08:51","modified_gmt":"2023-07-18T18:08:51","slug":"press-briefing-highlights-18-july-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/07\/18\/press-briefing-highlights-18-july-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing Highlights &#8211; 18 July 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Tuesday, 18 July 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly today holds its annual debate on the situation in the temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, spoke more broadly about the situation in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The war has now been underway for 509 days, with tens of thousands dead, scores of thousands injured, almost 6 million refugees scattered across Europe and an additional 6 million internally displaced.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, President K\u0151r\u00f6si, said that unleashing wars cannot become the norm.<\/p>\n<p>Aggression against a neighbouring country is illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Annexation is illegal.<\/p>\n<p>Attacking civilian targets is illegal, the President said.<\/p>\n<p>This was true in 1945, it was true in 2014, and it continues to be true today.<\/p>\n<p>The President said that the effects of this war extend beyond its borders, threatening the prospects of a sustainable future for people and the planet.<\/p>\n<p>Quote \u201cSimply put, this war is fundamentally unreconcilable with the achievement of our shared Goals \u2013 the ones we hope to secure humanity\u2019s survival.<\/p>\n<p>We do not need nations fighting each other when we have a common enemy: the cascading crises all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President also spoke directly to Russia and its leaders, saying that he, as many others, have great respect for the Russian nation and culture. But quote \u201cYou initiated this war.<\/p>\n<p>You have the power to end it. And, as one of the most influential decision-makers in the world, you can do it \u2013 if you want to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President reiterated his calls for all parties to come together in dialogue and diplomacy to restart negotiations on the Black Sea Grain Iniative.<\/p>\n<p>And he also \u2013 again \u2013 called for an end to the nuclear rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p>The President\u2019s full remarks are online and in your inboxes: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/07\/18\/pga-remarks-to-general-assembly-debate-on-ukraine\/\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/07\/18\/pga-remarks-to-general-assembly-debate-on-ukraine\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly debate will continue in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>NELSON MANDELA DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today is Nelson Mandela International Day.<\/p>\n<p>The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ commemoration of the Day will be this Thursday, at 10AM in Conference Room 4.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si will deliver remarks.<\/p>\n<p>The President will note that Madiba\u2019s life sculpted monumental change during the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century and his legacy continues to shape the 21<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Among other speakers at Thursday\u2019s event will be Mrs. Naledi Pandor, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa\u2026 and NYC Mayor Eric Adams.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the annual Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ commemoration, there is a public service component.<\/p>\n<p>The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ community is partnering this year with the City of New York to perform community service at the Nelson Mandela High School in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>The project is in line with this year\u2019s theme for the Day of \u201cclimate, food and solidarity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>VETO INITIATIVE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, at 10AM ET the General Assembly will hold a debate in line with the so-called Veto Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>This debate follows the Security Council meeting on 11 July, under the agenda item \u201cThe situation in the Middle East,\u201d \u2013 specifically on Syria \u2013 when a permanent member cast a veto.<\/p>\n<p>The debate will be in Conference Room 2.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si will deliver remarks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ANNUAL MEMORIAL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow morning, ahead of the General Assembly debate, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will pay his respects at the Annual Memorial Service for Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Personnel who lost their lives in the service of peace last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BILATERALS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President has a number of bilaterals today and yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Let me mention them quickly, and you will have the full names and titles in my notes.<\/p>\n<p>This morning, the President met with the Foreign Affairs of Andorra, Mrs. Imma Tor.<\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, the President will meet with State Counsellor L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Borbely to the Prime Minister&#8217;s Office of Romania.<\/p>\n<p>He will also meet with the Parliamentary State Secretaries of Germany. Those are Dr. B\u00e4rbel Kofler, &#8211; Parlamentary State Secretary, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and Dr. Bettina Hoffmann, Parlamentary State Secretary, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature, Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection.<\/p>\n<p>Also today, the President will meet with the Serbian Minister of Science, Technological Development and Innovation; Ms. Jelena Begovi\u0107<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the President met, among others, with Edward Senzo Mchunu, South African Minister of Water and Sanitation.<\/p>\n<p>The President also had a bilateral with Peter Bal\u00edk; Minister of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic.<\/p>\n<p>As well as with Ms. Romina Khurshid Alam, Convener Parliament SDGs Task Force,\u00a0 Minister of State &amp; Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing HLPF also have the President an opportunity to meet with Ms. Karoline Edtstadler, Austrian Federal Minister for EU and Constitution.<\/p>\n<p>As well as with the Director-General of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Mr. Albert van Jaarsveld.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked if the General Assembly is planning a meeting related to the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
