VETO INITIATIVE <\/strong><\/p>\n

Starting with the General Assembly debate\u2026<\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, today urged Security Council members to think about the needs of the 4.1 million people in Syria\u2019s north who are now all but cut off from food, water and medicine.<\/p>\n

Given the extraordinary lengths that Syrians are pursuing just to survive, the President said, it is only right that we ask: Are we doing enough to protect human life?<\/p>\n

He then called on the Security Council members to be alive to the realities and oriented towards genuine solutions\u2026 and to urgently prioritize long-term cooperation over division.<\/p>\n

The comments were made to the General Assembly, which today holds a debate in line with the so-called Veto Initiative.<\/p>\n

This debate follows the Security Council meeting on 11 July, under the agenda item \u201cThe situation in the Middle East,\u201d \u2013 specifically on Syria \u2013 when a permanent member cast a veto.<\/p>\n

President K\u0151r\u00f6si said that he wishes that he didn\u2019t need to convene today\u2019s debate.<\/p>\n

That the Security Council could have overcome its deadlock on humanitarian aid delivery to northern Syria.<\/p>\n

Yet, today\u2019s debate is a clear demonstration that two Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ organs \u2013 the Security Council and the General Assembly \u2013 can and must work together on matters of international peace and security, especially in times of crises.<\/p>\n

MEMORIAL SERVICE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier this morning, President K\u0151r\u00f6si paid homage to the United Nations personnel killed in the line of duty.<\/p>\n

The President lit a candle alongside Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres and Ambassador Barbara Woodward, in her capacity as President of the Security Council.<\/p>\n

GENDER ADVISORY BOARD<\/strong><\/p>\n

Turning to gender equality\u2026<\/p>\n

This afternoon, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will be joined by Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Women at a reception for the Member States who have pledged to complete the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ trainings on gender equality and prevention of sexual harassment.<\/p>\n

A total of 44 Member States joined the first phase. I will include the full list in my notes.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s ceremony is in the context of the President\u2019s Advisory Board on Gender Equality, which is coordinated by Ambassador Thilmeeza Hussain, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives.<\/p>\n

GLOBAL WATER INFO SYSTEM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Among his other engagements today, the President will speak an HLPF side-event organized by the World Meteorological Organizations in collaboration with Member States, on the need for a global water information system.<\/p>\n

That event will take place at 6:30pm.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

NELSON MANDELA DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tomorrow\u2026 The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ will commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s starting at 10AM ET in in Conference Room 4.<\/p>\n

President K\u0151r\u00f6si will deliver remarks, alongside Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres and others.<\/p>\n

The keynote will be delivered by Mr. Andrew Young, former United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations\u2026. who had worked for decades for social, political and economic advancement of oppressed people around the world.<\/p>\n

As part of the annual Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ commemoration, there is a public service component.<\/p>\n

The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ community is partnering this year with the City of New York to perform community service at the Nelson Mandela High School in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n

The project is in line with this year\u2019s theme for the Day of \u201cclimate, food and solidarity\u201d.<\/p>\n
