GENERAL ASSEMBLY<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the General Assembly today\u2026<\/p>\n

Member States started with a debate on the Report of the United Nations Youth Office.<\/p>\n

Member States then took action on a draft resolution related to culture of peace, which was introduced by Morocco.<\/p>\n

The title of the draft is \u201cPromoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech\u201d<\/p>\n

This item is likely of interest to you, because if you were following the GA, you would have heard the discussions around paragraph 13 of the draft.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the paragraph that reads: \u201cStrongly deploring all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief, as well as any such acts directed against their religious symbols, holy books, homes, businesses, properties, schools, cultural centres or places of worship, as well as all attacks on and in religious places, sites and shrines in violation of international law,\u201d<\/p>\n

The delegate from Spain submitted an oral amendment asking for the last words of that paragraph to be deleted \u2013 so to delete \u201cin violation of international law\u201d.<\/p>\n

There was a vote. The oral amendment to change the phrasing was not adopted. The vote was 44 in favour, 62 against and 24 abstentions.<\/p>\n

Member States then took action on the draft in its entirety. The resolution was adopted by consensus.<\/p>\n

You will have seen that similar wording was part of the resolution during the 75th<\/sup> session\u2026 but the wording related to \u201creligious symbols, holy books\u201d is new.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Also on today\u2019s agenda is a draft resolution on strengthening of the United Nations system.<\/p>\n

The draft is entitled \u201cSupporting the United Nations International School in enhancing international education and promoting multicultural interaction\u201d, and the draft urges Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵIS to increase its cultural diversity, among its points.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The next item on today\u2019s agenda are three draft decisions related to global health and foreign policy.<\/p>\n

These have to do with participation of non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions and the private sector in the high-level meeting on universal health coverage.<\/p>\n

There are three of them because while the wording is the same, each decision relates specifically to one of the three health-related high-level events, which as you know are on Pandemic Preparedness, Prevention and Response; Universal Healthcare; and Tuberculosis.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The last item on the agenda is related to the impact of rapid technological change on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and targets.<\/p>\n

Among his bilaterals today, President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si will meet with the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of Malta, Dr. Ian Borg.<\/p>\n
