{"id":255399,"date":"2023-07-31T13:13:49","date_gmt":"2023-07-31T17:13:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=255399"},"modified":"2023-07-31T13:13:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T17:13:49","slug":"noon-briefing-highlights-31-july-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/07\/31\/noon-briefing-highlights-31-july-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Noon Briefing Highlights &#8211; 31 July 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Monday, 31 July 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLIMATE CHANGE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si\u2019s is calling on the international community to stop climate change.<\/p>\n<p>In a new message, the President calls for action from Governments, the private sector, civil society groups, scientists, and regular people \u2013 saying \u201cit\u2019s all our responsibility to act to stop climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the SDG Summit on the horizon \u2013 on 18 and 19 September \u2013 President K\u0151r\u00f6si is urging Member States and all attending stakeholders to \u201ccome with concrete proposals and transform the way\u201d they do business.<\/p>\n<p>Quote \u201cDon\u2019t talk a lot of hot air. We have enough of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You will have the full message later today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>DSG MEETING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Still on the topic of the SDG Summit\u2026<\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, President K\u0151r\u00f6si will be meeting with Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.<\/p>\n<p>The focus will be on preparations for the SDG Summit and the High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TUESDAY GA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Looking to tomorrow\u2026<\/p>\n<p>At 10AM in the Trusteeship Council, Member States will hold a plenary GA meeting.<\/p>\n<p>They are expected to take action on a draft resolution related to the BBNJ \u2013 the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>They will then take action on a draft resolution related to the commemoration of the 125<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Permanent Court of Arbitration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GA REVITALIZATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And I wanted to highlight that the next episode of the OPGA Fellows\u2019 podcast is out.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth episode is about General Assembly revitalization. You know that Security Council reform is underway, you might not have realized that there is also a work stream that has been working on reforming the General Assembly.<br \/>\nOur Fellow from Cuba, Aim\u00e9 Triana spoke with the co-facilitators of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the General Assembly, which is just a very fancy way of saying, the process of reforming the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The co-facilitators are Ambassadors Egriselda L\u00f3pez, the Permanent Representative of El Salvador, and Ambassador Mitch Fifield, in his capacity as the Permanent Representative of Australia.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a fun podcast. The Ambassadors are very frank. The podcast is in English and in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>They touch on many different topics.<\/p>\n<p>One of them is the language used. This is a topic that you can all relate to. Ambassadors discuss the need to explain what the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ does and how it works in simple terms, not quote \u201cbureaucratic sludge\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They also discuss gender balance. \u00a0Not just more women Ambassadors, or PGAs or SGs, but also just the wording itself.
