AFGHANISTAN<\/strong><\/p>\n

You just heard from Special Envoy Gordon Brown about the state of education in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Let me draw your attention to the remarks that President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si made in November on the situation in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

Sadly, nothing positive has changed since then.<\/p>\n

Quote \u201cAfghanistan is facing complex and interlinked challenges that the Taliban have shown they cannot \u2013 or would not \u2013 solve.<\/p>\n

It is time to support the Afghan people with concrete solutions that place their needs front and center.<\/p>\n

Afghanistan is now the only state in the world that would deny girls their full right to education.<\/p>\n

I reiterate my call for the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms of all Afghans, especially women and girls.<\/p>\n

We expect the Taliban to make good on the commitments they made to the international community.\u00a0To show honesty through\u00a0concrete action.\u201d<\/p>\n

WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

Let me turn to World Humanitarian Day, which is marked annually on 19 August.<\/p>\n

President K\u0151r\u00f6si has put out a message in advance.<\/p>\n

He says that \u201chumanitarianism has always been at the heart of the United Nations system.<\/p>\n

The President salutes all humanitarian workers around the globe, risking their lives for the sake of improving others.<\/p>\n

No other is safe until everyone is safe. Humanitarian principles come first #NoMatterWhat<\/p>\n
