{"id":255631,"date":"2023-08-18T14:07:07","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T18:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/?p=255631"},"modified":"2023-08-18T14:07:07","modified_gmt":"2023-08-18T18:07:07","slug":"spokespersons-noon-briefing-highlights-18-august-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/77\/2023\/08\/18\/spokespersons-noon-briefing-highlights-18-august-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Spokesperson&#8217;s noon briefing highlights &#8211; 18 August 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Spokesperson for General Assembly President Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si<\/strong><strong><br \/>\nUnited Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Friday, 18 August 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>HUMANITARIANISM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today is the 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the bombing of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Headquarters in Baghdad.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the General Assembly, Csaba K\u0151r\u00f6si, paid his respects today to 22 people killed \u2013 and Stephane read out the names, and the more than 100 wounded on 19 August 2003.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the observance ceremony, President K\u0151r\u00f6si met briefly with some of the survivors.<\/p>\n<p>It was a very somber event for the President, who remembers the day well, having been in the diplomatic service at the time. And had already been in the Middle East for many years.<\/p>\n<p>President K\u0151r\u00f6si said the bombing in 2003 continues to have an impact on the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s work, and there are still many lessons to be learned from what happened, and what led to the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s event was centered around a wreath-laying by Under-Secretary-General Atul Khare followed by a moment of silence.\u00a0The event was organized jointly by the\u00a0Standing Committee on the Security and Independence of the International Civil Service and DMSPC.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Related tweet: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1692588746972053994\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ_PGA\/status\/1692588746972053994<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Today is also World Humanitarian Day.<\/p>\n<p>And the President had put out a message earlier this week:<\/p>\n<p>It includes the lines: \u201cHumanitarianism has always been at the heart of the United Nations system. He personally felt it was very important that the General Assembly be represented at the observance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORLD WATER WEEK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, the President heads to Sweden for an official visit, where he will take part in World Water Week.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, 20 August, he will visit the Stockholm Environment Institute, where he will have an interaction on strengthening the role of science in the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Then on Monday, 21 August, President K\u0151r\u00f6si, will participate in the opening ceremony for World Water Week He will then participate in discussions.<\/p>\n<p>From a practical perspective, because this is a topic that the President knows so well, he will not have formal prepared remarks. As a result, I don\u2019t know if we will be able to transcribe and share the remarks.<\/p>\n<p>My colleague Iseult will be traveling with the President, and if able, you will likely get the emailed information from her.<\/p>\n<p>Monday evening local time, the President will visit the Dag Hammarskjold Foundation and take part in a roundtable discussion on multilateralism.<\/p>\n<p>I will update you in the briefings on the rest of the President\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA PREPARATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was asked a number of questions yesterday related to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA preparations.<\/p>\n<p>In case you missed my notes\u2026<\/p>\n<p>On restrictions to movement and access\u2026there are always restrictions during Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵGA. As of right now, there are no COVID-related restrictions. So no masks and no vaccinations are required.<\/p>\n<p>On the Lists of Speakers, the revised will be put out the week of 28 August. Lists of speakers for any of the summits are not available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>QUESTIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spokesperson was asked about yesterday\u2019s bilateral on the SDG Summit between the President and the co-facilitators, and the progress on the SDG Summit Political Declaration. The Spokesperson said that President K\u0151r\u00f6si has full confidence in Ambassador Al-Thani, the PR of Qatar, and Ambassador Mythen, PR of Ireland, to bring all the Member States together.
