GA HOLDS HIGH-LEVEL PANEL ON PUBLIC ACCESSBILITY AND INCLUSIVITY

The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, spoke this morning, at the opening of the High-level Panel on Public accessibility and inclusivity: developing strategic initiatives to raise awareness on the role of and work of Ombudsman and mediator institutions in the promotion and protection of human rights, good governance and the rule of law.

In his remarks, the PGA highlighted the relevance of Ombudsman and Mediator Institutions as ¡°guardians of human rights and as enablers of accountability and transparency for good governance.¡±

President Francis added that they ensure that public authorities adhere to legal and highest ethical standards, forming an integral aspect of ¡°our ongoing efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals¡±.

The high-level panel discussion was followed by interventions from Member States and Observers.

WORLD FOOTBALL DAY COMMEMORATION

This afternoon at 3 p.m., President Francis will deliver remarks in a meeting to mark World Football Day which will take place each 25th of May, starting this year.

The resolution, introduced by Libya, was adopted by the General Assembly by consensus on 7 May.

This year, the world marks the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament in history as part of the 1924 Summer Olympic Games.

The PGA emphasizes the universal role of football which transcends borders and has the power to bring people together.

PGA TO SPEAK AT INTERNATIONAL DIALOGUE ON MIGRATION

The President of the General Assembly will take part, later today, in the 2024 International Dialogue on Migration (IDM) which opened on Tuesday, 21 May.

The first session of the Dialogue is taking place under the theme ¡°Facilitating regular pathways to a better future: harnessing the power of migration¡±.

The meeting is focusing on how to create better opportunities for people in the move in face of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there are at least 281 million migrants in the world, which equates to 3.6 per cent of the global population or one in 30 persons.

The PGA will deliver remarks alongside the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ms. Amy Pope, and the President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), H.E. Ms. Paula Narvaez.

The meeting will start at 5 p.m. in the ECOSOC Chamber and will be webcast.
