Good afternoon, everyone!

GENERAL ASSEMBLY ELECTS FIVE NEW MEMBERS TO THE SECURITY COÄ¢¹½ÊÓƵCIL

This morning, the General Assembly has elected five new non-permanent members to the Security Council for the biennium 2025-2026.

After the vote, under agenda item 113 (a), the following Member States were elected: Denmark, Greece, Panama, Pakistan, and Somalia.

Somalia will replace Mozambique at the seat of the African Group.

Pakistan will occupy the seat vacated by Japan in the Asia-Pacific Group.

Starting in January, Panama will represent the Latin American and Caribbean Group at the seat being held by Ecuador.

For the Western European and Others Group, there will be two new members: Denmark and Greece. Both will occupy seats which will be left by Malta and Switzerland, in December.

Congratulations to Denmark, Greece, Panama, Pakistan and Somalia on their elections today.

PGA Dennis Francis also thanked the tellers for the work done at the GA Hall.

Their new two-year-term at the Security Council will start on 1 January 2025 and expire on 31 December 2026.

 

PGA DENNIS FRANCIS PAYS TRIBUTE TO FALLEN STAFF MEMBERS

The President of the General Assembly, Mr. Dennis Francis, joined the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council in the Annual Memorial Service for Fallen Staff Members.

They lit a candle together in tribute and honour of the 188 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ personnel who lost their lives in 2023 in the line of duty before observing a minute of silence.

Most of the staff who perished last year, 135 women and men, were workers for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵRWA, in Gaza.

GA TO ELECT NEW PRESIDENT OF 79th SESSION OF GENERAL ASSEMBLY

This afternoon, at 3 p.m., at the GA Hall, Member States will hold a plenary meeting on agenda item 4 ¡°Election of the President of the General Assembly.¡±

The candidate for PGA79 is the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, H.E., Mr. Philemon Yang.

After the election, Mr. Yang will deliver remarks at the stakeout area, in front of the GA Hall, and take your questions.

The term of the new PGA will start on 10 September and go for a year until September 2025.
