I stand before you today, deeply honoured to address the\u00a0Institute for Global Engagement and Empowerment (IGEE)<\/b>, and I savour the opportunity to engage with a remarkable educational institution \u2013 and the bright minds it nurtures and shapes for the future.<\/p>\n
\n
As I look upon this gathering of young intellectuals \u2013 bursting with ideas \u2013 I am reminded of my own journey.<\/p>\n
\n
A journey that was profoundly influenced by the educators who guided and shaped my path \u2013 and led me to who I am today.<\/p>\n
Educators are not only guardians of knowledge.<\/p>\n
\n
They are liberators of human potential, freeing us from the chains of inequality, intolerance, hopelessness, and inaction.<\/p>\n
\n
Universities and institutes like this one are not merely centres of learning.<\/p>\n
\n
They are vibrant bastions and hubs of research, teeming with creativity, and vital sources of curiosity.<\/p>\n
\n
As young students, you are, and should be, independent thinkers \u2013 with fresh eyes and fresh ideas.<\/p>\n
\n
Your boundless potential, combined with the wisdom and guidance of those around you, holds the power to drive the transformation that our world so desperately needs.<\/p>\n
\n
Let me read that again: Your boundless potential, combined with the wisdom and guidance of those around you, holds the power to drive the transformation that our world so desperately needs.<\/p>\n
\n
It is therefore no accident that in September 2015 our World Leaders who gathered in New York saw it fit to adopt\u00a0SDG4 (on Quality Education),<\/b>\u00a0as part of our blueprint \u2013 the\u00a02030 Agenda and its 17 Goals.<\/b><\/p>\n
\n
As you would all be aware, SDG4 seeks to\u00a0ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities.<\/b><\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n
The Goal aims to invest in the youth dividend, by ensuring that\u00a0all\u00a0<\/b>boys and girls complete\u00a0free<\/b>\u00a0primary and secondary schooling by the target timeline of 2030.<\/p>\n
\n
I therefore call upon you all to join hands with other global youths, to promote awareness and full implementation of the 2030 Agenda and its goals. During my Presidency, I have committed to ensure broad youth engagement.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n
Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/i><\/p>\n
\n
Institutions like the IGEE \u2013 as places that inspire innovation and progressive thinking \u2013 are critical to helping us tackle the crises of today and mitigate those of tomorrow.<\/p>\n
\n
They push us to transcend the confines of conformity and think outside the box.<\/p>\n
\n
I eagerly await your suggestions, comments, and, in particular, your innovative ideas.<\/p>\n
\n
For governments do not hold a monopoly on good ideas \u2013 the very essence of\u00a0SDG17 (on Partnerships)\u00a0<\/b>of the 2030 Agenda.<\/b><\/p>\n
\n
The urgency of today’s crises requires a global and innovative approach \u2013 precisely the kind of thinking that institutions like the IGEE promote \u2013 and that young people so unswervingly spearhead.<\/p>\n
\n
Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/i><\/p>\n
\n
The world faces an array of interconnected crises \u2013 from the impacts of\u00a0COVID-19<\/b>, the looming\u00a0climate crisis<\/b>,\u00a0conflicts<\/b>\u00a0erupting worldwide, backsliding on\u00a0human rights<\/b>\u00a0and aggravated\u00a0gender inequality<\/b>\u00a0in regions across the globe.<\/p>\n
\n
This combination of crises is not mere political theory.<\/p>\n
\n
It acts as a powder keg, holding the potential to ignite cataclysmic consequences for global stability.<\/p>\n
\n
For this reason, for my Presidency of the 78th<\/sup>\u00a0Session of the United Nations General Assembly I have chosen to focus on the theme: “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all<\/i>.”<\/p>\n\n
Indeed \u2013 as the United Nations\u2019 chief deliberative and policy making body, and as the most representative organ of the Organization \u2013 the General Assembly is the foremost ideal forum for fostering international cooperation and dialogue on the most pressing issues of our time.<\/p>\n
\n
We need\u00a0peace<\/b>, because, at the outset of its Charter, the United Nations is an organization that was founded on the promise to promote peace and to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.<\/p>\n
We need\u00a0prosperity<\/b>, because although the world is not short of means, tools or resources to improve the situations of many countries \u2013 particularly those facing intersecting crises \u2013 too many people are too often left behind, marginalized, disposed, facing hopelessness and indeed, desperate.<\/p>\n
\n
Progress<\/b>, we need, because we are lagging behind on too many fronts \u2013 whether for achieving full gender equality, implementing innovative solutions to tackle climate change, or in reforming our unjust global financial architecture.<\/p>\n
\n
And,\u00a0sustainability<\/b>, because our solutions \u2013 to all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, not only the climate-related ones \u2013 must stand the test of time and benefit future generations.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n
These four principles will guide my Presidency during the 78th<\/sup>\u00a0General Assembly Session.<\/p>\n\n
They represent the core values of the United Nations, and I have no doubt that together \u2013 as one global community of the older and the younger (and fresher, like you) \u2013 we can make them a reality.<\/p>\n
\n
However, dear friends, the scale of the challenges ahead cannot be underestimated \u2013 and our responsibility is immense.<\/p>\n
\n
We need\u00a0your<\/b>\u00a0help.<\/p>\n
\n
Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ emerged out of the ashes of two World Wars, and was instrumental during the Cold War in averting a third global conflict.<\/p>\n
\n
But the world is on the brink once more.<\/p>\n
\n
The aggression against Ukraine has triggered food and energy crises across the globe and has revived the unconscionable real threat of nuclear warfare.<\/p>\n
\n
This war \u2013 beyond its physical impacts \u2013 has shaken the foundations of our international rules-based system and eroded\u00a0trust<\/b>\u00a0among Member States, and in the United Nations itself.<\/p>\n
\n
For this reason, I have been unequivocal in my calls to respect the United Nations Charter, whose provisions protect all nations, large and small.<\/p>\n
\n
But I am alive to the reality that peace cannot be reduced to\u00a0the absence of war<\/b>.<\/p>\n
\n
This month\u2019s events in the\u00a0Middle East<\/b>\u00a0are a sober reminder of just how quickly tensions can rise and result in unthinkable acts of brutality.<\/p>\n
\n
Let me be clear:\u00a0Violence only begets more violence<\/b>.<\/p>\n
\n
And, in times of conflict, it is systematically civilians, women, children and those most vulnerable who suffer the most.<\/p>\n
\n
We must remember \u2013\u00a0peace is a process<\/b>, not an event.<\/p>\n
\n
This process is the very foundation of our efforts to ensure\u00a0prosperity, progress<\/b>, and\u00a0sustainability\u00a0<\/b>for all \u2013 as we strive to restore our multilateral system and construct a fair and equitable world.<\/p>\n
\n
Peace<\/b>\u00a0is the foundation not only of the United Nations as an organisation, but of a world where the nations are genuinely united.<\/p>\n
\n
As an incoming member of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Security Council, your own country’s leadership and fellow diplomats have the opportunity to contribute to our unwavering quest for sustainable peace \u2013 as we grapple with these issues.<\/p>\n
\n
As President of the General Assembly, I look forward to collaborating closely with the Republic of Korea and all Members in the name of and in the interest of global peace and security.<\/p>\n
\n
But, my friends, this represents just one facet of the complex challenges we face.<\/p>\n
\n
We have fallen off track on\u00a0every single goal<\/b>\u00a0of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development \u2013 yet we have only half of the time \u2013 that\u2019s is seven years \u2013 to 2030.<\/p>\n
\n
Every single one \u2013 and I repeat \u2013\u00a0every single one\u00a0<\/b>of the 17 SDGs.<\/p>\n
\n
If we do not urgently change course,<\/p>\n
\n- 575 million people<\/b>\u00a0will still live in extreme poverty in 2030.<\/li>\n
- 680 million<\/b>\u00a0will still suffer from hunger.<\/li>\n
- 84 million children<\/b>\u00a0will remain out of school.<\/li>\n
- It will take a staggering \u2013 a staggering \u2013\u00a0300 years<\/b>\u00a0to end child marriage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\n
While the recommitment to the SDGs we saw at the\u00a02023 SDG Summit<\/b>\u00a0in September is encouraging, we need champions of sustainable development \u2013 like the Republic of Korea \u2013 to lead the way, as our torchbearers.<\/p>\n
\n
At the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, we view the Republic of Korea\u2019s recent adoption of legislation on sustainable development and its staunch leadership in the reduction of inequalities as a true embodiment of the phrase “leave no one behind<\/i><\/b>.”<\/p>\n
\n
A phrase that without\u00a0this<\/i>\u00a0type of action, is rendered meaningless.<\/p>\n
\n
Indeed, we cannot afford to be complacent.<\/p>\n
\n
As I indicated, achieving the SDGs requires the\u00a0collective efforts<\/b>\u00a0(or partnerships) by all sectors of society, not just governments acting alone.<\/p>\n
\n
I therefore welcome the IGEE’s activism and ambition in this regard \u2013 from research on climate and peace, to global food security.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n
Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/i><\/p>\n
\n
A central focus of my Presidency \u2013 and a critical measure of our advancement \u2013 revolves around ensuring that each and every one of us has equal opportunities to prosper on a level playing field.<\/p>\n
\n
As things stand, it will take\u00a0140 years<\/b>\u00a0for women to be equally represented in leadership, and a\u00a0whopping 286 years<\/b>\u00a0to close gender gaps in legal protection and to remove discriminatory laws.<\/p>\n
\n
We cannot be that patient with discrimination.<\/p>\n
We must change with the time \u2013 and urgently so.<\/p>\n
\n
Continuing to deny half the world’s population their most fundamental human rights is not only economically unsound, but it is a moral disgrace, and we must, as the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ raise our collective and individual voices to remedy it.<\/p>\n
\n
I recently saw an analysis that suggests that if women were allowed to participate unhindered in the economy, the global GDP would climb to 26 trillion US dollars.<\/p>\n
\n
From education, to housing, to health \u2013 levelling the playing field so that women can take their rightful place alongside men has benefits and dividends far beyond the family. It manifests in the economy and in the building of strong communities.<\/p>\n
\n
The upcoming\u00a075th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/b>\u00a0is a great opportunity for us to right the wrongs and turn rhetoric into reality.<\/p>\n\n
Within the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ itself, we need to walk the talk.\u00a0Only four women<\/b>\u00a0have held my role as President of the General Assembly \u2013 ever.<\/p>\n
\n
At the Council of PGAs \u2013 the conference I came to Korea to attend \u2013 the scarcity of women is embarrassingly glaring.<\/p>\n
\n
We need young people’s voices \u2013 including those in this room \u2013 to help us overhaul this discreditable status quo.<\/p>\n
\n
Please, do not get me wrong \u2013 I am not saying you should mobilize the streets, and protest. I mean through peaceful and constructive dialogue with leaders.<\/p>\n
\n
You have the power to effect change, meaningful change.<\/p>\n
\n
Use, effectively, all the dialogue spaces at your disposal to deliver a message of change, of justice and of balance.<\/p>\n
\n
Importantly, as the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ prepares for a\u00a0Summit of the Future in 2024<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 which strives to have a profound effect on future generations \u2013 meaningful youth engagement will be critical to our success.<\/p>\n
\n
As Member States work to outline the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s priorities to address the challenges that lie ahead \u2013 from the opportunities of the\u00a0digital revolution<\/b>\u00a0to a new\u00a0agenda for peace<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 your voices will be essential.<\/p>\n
\n
From\u00a0disaster reduction\u00a0<\/b>(that is, the Sendai Framework),\u00a0health<\/b>, and\u00a0security<\/b>, young people worldwide are demanding change.<\/p>\n
\n
It is therefore crucial that, as world leaders, we accept to work with the global youth and to ensure that you are afforded an active and meaningful role in shaping policies and decisions that will affect you primarily.<\/p>\n
\n
At the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ, we encourage inclusivity in negotiations, listening to civil society, Non-Governmental Organisations, Indigenous Peoples, scientists, and youths \u2013 including through the\u00a0ECOSOC Youth Forum<\/b>\u00a0held annually in April.<\/p>\n
\n
Dear Friends, and Colleagues,<\/i><\/p>\n
\n
The goals of\u00a0peace<\/b>,\u00a0progress<\/b>, and\u00a0prosperity<\/b>\u00a0are meaningless if we cannot live\u00a0sustainably<\/b>\u00a0on this planet.<\/p>\n
\n
Our unrelenting desire for economic growth \u2013 and our unsustainable development practices and consumption patterns \u2013 are driving our planet to breaking point.<\/p>\n
\n
But nature is fighting back, and time is running out.<\/p>\n
\n
Natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity, and sea-level rise is more and more becoming a real\u00a0existential<\/b>\u00a0threat \u2013 especially for Small Island Developing States like my home, Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n
\n
This unprecedented challenge falls directly under the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ\u2019s remit, and it is imperative that we step up and take bold action.<\/p>\n
\n
Our pursuit of sustainable development must strike a proper balance between all the dimensions \u2013 the\u00a0economic<\/b>,\u00a0social<\/b>, and\u00a0environmental<\/b>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\n
We must strengthen adaptive capacities, resilience, and mitigate climate-related losses and damages through quick impact projects and other solutions.<\/p>\n
\n
Above all, we must be guided and energised by\u00a0unity<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0solidarity<\/b>.<\/p>\n
\n
How else can we turn the recent and historic recognition of our right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment into a reality for all to enjoy?<\/p>\n
\n
Your innovative minds and wealth of knowledge will \u2013 I am most certain \u2013 significantly contribute to achieving this goal.<\/p>\n
\n
Friends,<\/i><\/p>\n
\n
As I visit the Republic of Korea, I am struck by your country’s commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.<\/p>\n
\n
Our journeys have been intertwined for decades \u2013 as the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ expanded, Korea has gone from being one of the earliest hosts of a Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-authorised force to being one of the world\u2019s leading economies and a major actor in global peace and security efforts.<\/p>\n
\n
From Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, to former President of the General Assembly and Chair of the Council of Presidents of the General Assembly, Han Seung-soo, through to Korea\u2019s significant contributions to Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ peacekeeping missions \u2013 your nation has consistently given the United Nations her most precious resource, the Korean people.<\/p>\n
\n
For this I am most grateful, and indeed, respectful.<\/p>\n
\n
We all share one duty. The duty of\u00a0hope<\/b>.<\/p>\n
\n
In times like these \u2013 where\u00a0hope<\/b>\u00a0may be in short supply \u2013 we are collectively dutybound to restore it.<\/p>\n
\n
To keep hoping for a future where we can come together to address these challenges.<\/p>\n
\n
To\u00a0reignite global solidarity, implement the Sustainable Development Agenda, and deliver peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all<\/i>.<\/p>\n
\n
For the General Assembly, and I as its President, we count on the invaluable role and inspiring work of the IGEE as well as the confidence and intellectual prowess of its students to be empowered to act as global citizens.<\/p>\n

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all delegations for their active participation in this High-Level Meeting.<\/p>
Today, we have heard a resounding call for nuclear disarmament, a moral imperative that\u00a0cannot<\/b>\u00a0be ignored.<\/p>
We cannot let these horrendous weapons jeopardize life on our planet.<\/p>
I earnestly urge delegations and state leaders to wield their authority and expansive influence to resoundingly amplify the message of nuclear risk.<\/p>
Let us rally for decisive action in the pursuit of global peace and harmony.<\/p>
Let us commit to supporting every effort to transform nuclear disarmament into a reality.<\/p>
