They have my full support.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are here because we recognize that sea-level rise poses a real\u00a0<b>existential<\/b>\u00a0threat to many Member States and that urgent collective action is needed to address its adverse impacts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For low-lying and small island developing States,\u00a0<b>no<\/b>\u00a0issue, I repeat,\u00a0<b>no<\/b>\u00a0issue is more pressing. None more consequential.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Coastal storm surge, flooding and other extreme sea events are not only destroying cherished lands and uprooting generations of families but also eroding the rich cultural and historical heritage of entire generations, nations and regions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Without ambitious support, some countries could face total inundation by the end of the century.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This challenge is raising stark, sensitive questions around the future of statehood, territorial and maritime boundaries and the\u00a0<b>forcible<\/b>\u00a0movement of persons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While domestic policies can support resilience, long-term prospects depend\u00a0<b>critically<\/b>\u00a0on the global community\u2019s ability to prevent destructive climate scenarios.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As President of the General Assembly \u2013 and a citizen of a Small Island Developing State, Trinidad and Tobago \u2013 I feel the firm responsibility to stand in solidarity with vulnerable communities as we push for greater global action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We owe it to\u00a0<b>all<\/b>\u00a0those affected to ensure\u00a0<b>predictability, sustainability and security<\/b>\u00a0amid the climate crisis \u2013 and to advance a\u00a0<b>collective<\/b>\u00a0approach that prioritises the foundational pledge to leave\u00a0<b>no one<\/b>\u00a0behind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To advance our discussions, I will convene an informal plenary debate on 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0of November, offering a platform for Member States and independent experts, to explore this issue in all its complexity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We must forge strong partnerships to address the adverse impacts of sea-level rise, pooling resources, knowledge and technology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is critical that we empower all people to make well informed choices about their futures, particularly women, children and indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These efforts build on historic steps taken in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The General Assembly\u2019s request for an International Court of Justice advisory opinion on State climate change obligations is hailed as a milestone shift towards climate justice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That the resolution was adopted by consensus \u2013 and co-sponsored by more than 130 countries \u2013 signals just how far global attitudes about the\u00a0<b>urgency<\/b>\u00a0of climate change are shifting.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s historic recognition of the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment only further cements the General Assembly\u2019s key role in protecting our global commons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But, we cannot stop here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>No effort should be spared to safeguard the inalienability of affected Member States\u2019 sovereignty and statehood.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We should be loud and clear that their Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ membership is not a matter of subjective debate. It must be seen as a constant; in perpetuity.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLife can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived\u00a0<b>forwards<\/b>,\u201d as Soren Kierkegaard, the father of existentialism, so aptly observed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I take this as a\u00a0<b>bold<\/b>\u00a0call to action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The existential threat faced by vulnerable countries is certainly not one of their making \u2013 yet it will irreparably define their futures.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kierkegaard, fiercely prodigious, was not someone to sit on the side lines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Neither am I.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I will continue to take a proactive approach and keep my door open to any Member State seeking to make headway on these issues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I thank Her Royal Highness the Crown Princess again, for also rallying us around this critical cause and I look forward to engaging with each one of you tonight and on November 3rd on how we, together, can chart a sustainable path\u00a0<b>forward<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>I thank participation in this High-Level Meeting.<\/p><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Today, we have heard a resounding call for nuclear disarmament, a moral imperative that\u00a0<b>cannot<\/b>\u00a0be ignored.<\/p><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">We cannot let these horrendous weapons jeopardize life on our planet.<\/p><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">I earnestly urge delegations and state leaders to wield their authority and expansive influence to resoundingly amplify the message of nuclear risk.<\/p><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Let us rally for decisive action in the pursuit of global peace and harmony.<\/p><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Let us commit to supporting every effort to transform nuclear disarmament into a reality.<\/p><p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Together, we can secure a safer, more peaceful world for
