Your Excellency, Mr. Joonkook Hwang, Permanent Representative of the Republic of\u00a0Korea<\/span>,<\/i><\/p>\n

Excellencies, Distinguished Guests,<\/i><\/p>\n

\n

At the outset, let me sincerely thank His Excellency Mr. Joonkook Hwang, Ambassador and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of\u00a0Korea<\/span>,\u00a0for the kind invitation to join you this evening.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am particularly honoured and indeed delighted to commemorate\u00a0Korea<\/span>n National Foundation Day and the 70th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of the\u00a0Korea<\/span>n War Armistice.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Having just returned from an extremely successful visit to Seoul, I am newly struck by your country\u2019s extraordinary leadership in seeking\u00a0peaceful, progressive<\/b>\u00a0solutions to the complex challenges facing our world today.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My visit to the Demilitarized Zone was especially a very important demonstration of the importance of sustaining and nurturing peace \u2013 by all and any means \u2013 and what the enjoyment of\u00a0peace<\/b>\u00a0can bring in charting a sustainable path for achieving sustainable development, as South\u00a0Korea<\/span>\u00a0has so amply demonstrated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I saw prospects of peace and progress in the independent thinking of the students I interacted with at Yonsei University \u2013 in their ambition and a greater sense of self-empowerment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

I saw it in the enriching deliberations of the Annual Meeting of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly, hosted in Seoul by its Chair, Han Seung-soo, former Prime Minister of the Republic of\u00a0Korea<\/span>\u00a0and former PGA.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also saw it in the unwavering commitment of your leaders, President Yoon Suk Yeol, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and Foreign Minister Park Jin \u2013 with whom I engaged in depth on the most pressing issues facing not only the\u00a0Korea<\/span>n Peninsula, but our international\u00a0<\/a>community as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

And I see it again, here in New York, in the creative expression of the venerated Seocho Philharmonia, Artistic Director Jong Hoon Bae, and the talented musicians performing under a theme of peace and remembrance tonight.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

In many ways, tonight\u2019s performance is the perfect representation of the Republic of\u00a0Korea<\/span>\u2019s connection to history, its remarkable economic dynamism \u2013 and its determined reach to the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It celebrates the power of art to transcend borders, build bridges across communities and foster dialogue and understanding among peoples of difference cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this time of today\u2019s heightened geopolitical tensions and conflicts, dialogue is paramount in all that we do. It is the stuff of patience and restraint among other things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let me repeat that: In this time of today\u2019s heightened geopolitical tensions and conflicts, dialogue is paramount in all that we do. It is the stuff of patience and restraint among other things.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether addressing conflict or climate, food, energy or sustainable development, the multilateral system will need the same unity and connection to create transformational change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the eve of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Day \u2013 marking the entry into force of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Charter \u2013 I can think of no more important message for diplomacy today than one of\u00a0unity\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0solidarity<\/b>\u00a0among all nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ family must find new ways to return to the solidarity that brought us together almost eight decades ago \u2013 and helped us resolve some of the most intractable questions around peace and disarmament, development, human rights, and international law.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Indeed, for these nearly eighty years,\u00a0Korea<\/span>\u2019s history has been intertwined with that of the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ. As I saw so clearly in Seoul, the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ is in\u00a0Korea<\/span>\u2019s DNA.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And, as President of the General Assembly, I hope to bring forward a renewed spirit of cooperation; to revive trust and accelerate action towards\u00a0peace<\/b>,\u00a0prosperity<\/b>,\u00a0progress<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0sustainability<\/b>\u00a0for all.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I encourage the Republic of\u00a0Korea<\/span>\u00a0to continue lighting our path forward, through your deep commitment to international peace and active engagement in all our shared endeavours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>

Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/i><\/p>

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all delegations for their active participation in this High-Level Meeting.<\/p>

Today, we have heard a resounding call for nuclear disarmament, a moral imperative that\u00a0cannot<\/b>\u00a0be ignored.<\/p>

We cannot let these horrendous weapons jeopardize life on our planet.<\/p>

I earnestly urge delegations and state leaders to wield their authority and expansive influence to resoundingly amplify the message of nuclear risk.<\/p>

Let us rally for decisive action in the pursuit of global peace and harmony.<\/p>

Let us commit to supporting every effort to transform nuclear disarmament into a reality.<\/p>

Together, we can secure a safer, more peaceful world for all, with all that this implies for global prosperity.<\/p>
