Remarks by the President of the General Assembly,<\/strong><\/p>\n Mr. Dennis Francis,<\/strong><\/p>\n at the International Day of Women and Girls in Science<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n [as delivered]<\/strong><\/p>\n 9 February 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n Your Royal Highness, Dr. Nisreen Al-Hashemite,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Excellencies,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is with great pleasure and a deep sense of commitment that I join you this morning in spotlighting the significance, not merely to women and girls, but more importantly, to society at large, of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I extend my heartfelt thanks and commend the Permanent Missions of Costa Rica, Lebanon, Malta, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Rwanda, and Spain, for organizing this timely event together with the Royal Academy of Science International Trust.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I also thank other organizers and the numerous co-sponsors for shedding light on an important cause \u2013 the advancement of Women in Science Leadership \u2013 <\/i>which holds huge potential to usher in a New Era for Sustainability, <\/i>particularly as it sets the stage for the upcoming Sustainability Week, which I will convene in April 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n As per the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO Institute for Statistics, a mere 33% of the world’s researchers are women<\/b>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This distressingly low figure is identical to the income gap across the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, where women earn about 33% less than their male counterparts<\/b> \u2013 a disparity grossly exacerbated for women of colour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The conspicuously low representation of female role models in these fields, the sparse representation of women scientists as Nobel laureates, and the evident underinvestment in STEM education for girls \u2013 all perpetuated by gender stereotypes and biases<\/b> \u2013 are symptoms of the uphill battle women are still forced to confront in their professional lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Excellencies,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Gender diversity in STEM fields not only enhances problem-solving, creativity, and productivity but in fact elevates scientific accuracy and quality<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We must<\/i>, therefore, urgently dismantle the barriers holding back women and girls in science.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n (Applause. Thank you.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n This means addressing biases, social norms, and expectations<\/b> that perpetuate the cycle of lesser educational and career prospects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It means investing in <\/b>research and development, technology, education, as well as training programmes, for women and girls.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n And it means fostering a safe and inclusive workplace<\/b> for women and girls\u2019 growth and success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Initiatives like the L\u2019Or\u00e9al-Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵESCO For Women in Science International Awards<\/b> and the Young Talents Programme for the Caribbean<\/b> are commendable steps forward.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I congratulate the recent recipients, Dr. Sarah Buckland, and Ms. Sunshine De Caires,<\/span>1<\/span> who will, no doubt, inspire many girls to follow their paths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is empirically established<\/b> that empowering women yields substantial benefits for all of society.
